Hey Alan, no really a fan of either but between the two I'd always preferred Mothers.

This is a tough one. Zappa tends to be a tad more "non musician listener friendly" but The Mothers are a tad more . . . "edgey".

What kind of girl do you think we are? Mothers.

Billy was a mountain, Ethel was a tree growing off of his shoulder. Edgy?

The Mothers of Invention played Aaron Russo's Electric Theater (soon the club's name was changed to the Kinetic Playground. Aaron Russo was the first person to book Led Zeppelin in the United States ) in late spring of '68 as the warm up act for Canned Heat, they were amazing, great show that I will always remember. I did not ever get to see Frank Zappa any other time but witnessed how his music influenced people in such a wonderful way when at Knebworth '74 his album Apostophe' was played between acts and the crowd loved it.

I only heard Zappa with the Nothers so I could not comment on his solo work. When I was 23 three I worked with this guy from LI and he was a huge fan and made me 3 cassettes worth of Zappa and after a few listens I saw the brilliance of the oddest quirkiest music ever. And you have to love his titles.

Zappa was truly a genius and his music is beyond the comprehension of most non musicians.Songs like Willie the Pimp and $@!&# Demention wouldn't really appeal to most but if anyone wants to ease somebody into Zappa appreciation I suggest you pick up Strictly Commercial,a compilation of his more "commercial" works such as Valley Girl and Peaches en Regalia.

Only saw Frank with The Mothers once. It was back during the "Susie Creamcheese" tour/album promotion. It was a very memorable experience.

I think Dweezil has picked up so many of EVH's technique and combined with his Dad's and his own, is a damn good player himself!

saw frank quite a few times including the show in boston just before he went on to new york for the baby snakes film. he pulled out a sheet of paper and performed "i have been in you" the first time ever. he mentions the boston show in the film.
i saw his last tour also before he disappeard into the umrc to play with his toys until his untimely death.
dweezil has done an incredible job reproducing his dad's music with the zpz bunch. he'll announce the song, what version of it it's going to be and absolutely nails the sound like you were listening to the albums as they were recorded. love it when he jams to the film of his dad...i'm gonna go cry now.
zappa, mothers... jimmy carl black's grandmothers, jean luc ponty plays the music of frank zappa, plastic ono mothers... it's all frank anyway and i still love it.
