Yeah we all know the song, but I just revisited the solo the other day and it's really fun to play. Maybe it's just a nostalgia thing but I really enjoyed myself.

The riff is probably the most simple to play but the solo for its time is quite sophisticated as is the Highway Star solo. Blackmore was one of the first players to use a lot of diatonic scales in his playing and I always feel he gets slighted. As they always say the big 3 from the UK Clapton, Beck and Page when it should be the big 4. No Blackmore no Yngwie.

seems that Blackmore was into medieval music even then , in a piece on CNN he said that most people forget to play the riff in forth's , a practice common to much early music .

saw purple play at the dome Brighton in about '73 , and Blackmore was having one of those nights , shame but happens .

I'm willing to bet that Smoke on the Water and Stairway to Heaven are responsible for more nervous breakdowns in guitar shop staff than any other songs.
