Never ever been lost ever. I always know exactly where I am.

I may not know where certain other things are in relation to me, like the M6 or the post office tower. I always know exactly where I am though.

In my 20s I spent a few months backpacking around the US. I got lost a lot! :D

In Boston I "somehow" managed to forget what I was doing, I came back to myself at 3am standing on a street corner in the rain. I'd misplaced my friends and spent all my money. It was light by the time I found the hotel so I just slept through until dinner time and we went out and found Boston again

I met a lot of cool people on that trip - getting lost is the best way to find out about yourself.

I'm too big to get lost. The cops or security gruards are always following me. I can't go into a store without someone thinking I'm a terrorist or murderer. My friends think I'm a serial killer and will eventually get caught.

I can't get away with anything.

Maybe that's not such a bad thing.

Glad you found your way back.

Every really good motorcycle trip has at least one wrong turn! 8)

Once... when I was three years old I rode a tricycle four miles across town and was lost. I kept going I guess hoping to find something I knew. But at age three... you don't know much! That was in Sycamore Illinois in 1956. My mom and dad had the police looking for me because some children had been abducted in another town.

I have gotten turned around out hunting but that's not "really" lost... it just means you have a long damn walk back to the truck.

I was completely lost in my teens...seemed to find my way for a few years and then.......boom.........lost again from about 27 years old until until I was 41. Some good friends gave me the directions that I needed and now I am not lost anymore. Being lost was quite a frightening experience for me.......but I am very happy to be back (so are my friends and family)

I lost my car once at a shopping mall, I can't remember how I ever found it, it was at night and it took a very very long time, I was a little worried.

I have spent the night in the wood twice where I had no idea as to my location. Well I kind of knew where I was but miscalculated My time finding my way back before dark. The one time I walked out onto a farm road and walked about and 45 minutes before a pickup come along and picked me up, turned out I was about 6 miles from where I had left my truck parked. Now when I hunt I mark off location with GPS. I tell people when you are under the canopy in the middle of the mountains at night you can't see your hand in front of your face. Much less anything in the woods with you  best sit back against a tree and rest till morning.

Ha ha! So true! If you keep moving, you are likely to walk into an area that was already covered by those who might be searching for you. Stay put.

I am not a smoker, but I always carry a Bic lighter in my gear when I'm out in the woods. It gets damn cold at night here in Vermont and a small fire could be a lifesaver. Have never had to use it thank the Lord. 8)

These days I generally have a cell phone and an FRS radio along as well. I'm too old to be out roughing it. In my younger days I have slept under a plastic shelter while hunting only to awake to 6" of fresh snow. A glorious sight in the wild to be sure.

I got lost in Southern Peru a few times and ended up being drunk with a bunch of Indians I met in Ica. It actually ended up being a blessing because the family still remains friends of mine to this day. But I had been walking around in the desert near Huacachina for a few hours and it was getting dark so I got lucky. Not a place you want to get lost for sure, that desert is enormous and lots of people have gotten lost there and never heard from again.

Other than that I just feel lost to the world most of the time.

HA! Since this thread began I have been lost - again! And in a very similar way to the above.

CV, I recall you saying you liked reading Sherlock Holmes stories, is that right? Couple of days ago I went for a long walk on Dartmoor in a spot called Fox Tor Mires, which it is claimed was the direct inspiration for the (fictional) Grimpen Mires in The Hound of the Baskervilles. I miscalculated how long the walk I intended would take and it got dark while I was still way out in the landscape. No GPS, no map, no compass, no flashlight. I can navigate by the stars perfectly well and it was a clear night. Problem is those marshes. You don't really get sucked under, but you can get badly stuck. Don't take a wrong step. Too cold to think of stopping for the night, so...

A couple of hours got me out of there, back on the road and another hour walk to where I left the car. No real difficulty - but it was fun! Here's someone else's photo of what that bit of landscape looks like in the daylight:
Image

In my country that passes for deepest wilderness...

A good local story about those mires. A fella was walking along when he saw a nice quality hat sitting on the surface of a marsh. Very carefully he edged himself forward till he could reach and grab it - at which point he was astounded to find a head underneath. A gentleman submerged from the neck down smiled up and introduced himself in a well-spoken city accent. The moorman started trying to pull him out but couldn't shift him. The gent smiled again and said if he'd wait a moment he'd try and get his feet out of the stirrups of the horse he was sitting on...

Ho ho.

Cheers - C
