Have you done any market research in your area to see if it's even feasible? If there aren't alot of people who would use the studio there's no point in opening one.

Hi StRaT_MaN: you're 17, huh? Have you got the money to buy and build a recording studio? Do you know how much that will cost? Is there any demand for one - recording studios are closing left, right and center at the moment, did you know?

So happens Abbey Road Studios, where more famous albums have been recorded than probably anywhere else on the planet (not to mention film sound tracks, pop videos, etc etc) is currently being put up for sale. Likely price as a going concern: 10-20 million. Likely price for redevelopment as expensive apartments: 100-200 million.

The world don't want recording studios anymore, sadly...

Cheers - C

I couldn't agree more. I used to work at a Morrisound Studios in Tampa FL and when i moved to NYC, I saw the industry take a shift as technology was getting smaller and more affordable and gone was the absolute need to have an SSL or Neve console and 2 inch machine, so I got into Audio for Film and Television. I'm very happy i made that decision, Hit Factory closed among many other big studios. My worthless advice would be to have a nice project studio in basement and start small, if you see a market for your services you can always expand. Its just not something you want to take a huge business loan out to build if there isn't a market. Keep in mind... most of the folks that are going to come through the door will likely have no budget either, and they will always want something for nothing.

It seems like its a Do It Yourself time period. People can buy inexpensive programs for computers and put out a decent quality recording themselves. I saw a local studio advertising on Kijiji for months and then I saw them on the same site selling off their gear. If the market is good and you have the funds, all the power to you, but its an iffy market these days.

If you can setup a studio like this, you might do well, if not, I wouldn't even bother. Just my 2 cents.

When I was in college 15 years ago I had to do a business case project for one of my Music Business management courses. I did just that the startup cost for a studio. This went form building equipment etc. It was incredibly involved and detailed. What most folks fail to realize is that you may have a building but then you will need to do a complete acoustic analysis and then treatment. I don't mean the stuff you glue to the walls. It is when you go and fill the cinder blocks with sand and then do vibration testing etc etc. This can easily tack on an additional $3 to 5 Million to the price. Then the cost of engineers, technicians, business staff, legal. Not trying to kill the dream, but as Cervantes once said "To be forewarned is to be forearmed that is half the battle".
