I have always looked at both guitars and have seen most people with a strat.I persenaly bought a cheap strat thats not even fender(silvertone) and that was my first electric.I had only seen strats. I looked at other guitars and saw tele's and stangs and jaguars etc.And thought to myself "what would I have gotten if I knew about these other guitars?".And it lead me to this subject.I call it the battle of the "casters".So tell me Tele or strat?

You need at least one of each. If you favour strats have ten strats and one tele, if you favour tele's have ten tele's and one strat.

I don't have a Tele - yet... When I mentioned to my wife last night I'd like to get another guitar she didn't laugh (or shout), so you never know.

I agree to have one of each. When you can, try to play a few to see which one feels the best for you.

I do not have a Telecaster at this time because I used to not be able to stand the headstock, but the tones you can get from them are awesome. I have recently started admiring the Telecasters, but my first love has always been Stratocasters.

As a total novice (we tend to have only one guitar) I say the Stratocaster is the better first choice. More pups, more choices, more sounds, more versatility.

I used to find the Telecaster a little boxy looking compared to the Strat and the headstock rather... just funky.

Once you hear a Tele in the hands of a proficient musician you soon appreciate the beauty within that simpler design.

I'll have an acoustic before I get another electric though. 8)

I also have been liking tele's it was the same with me.The headstock was too skiny. I have both played teles and strats.I have only played teles with strat pickups(3 so it was modded) so i can safely say tele's even with the similar sounds with the ones I played. This also adds a question.I have been thinking about getting a squier OBEY tele. Are they any good?

P.S I will be trying out a musicmaster II (If the guitar clerk lets me) I'll post some pics and tell you how it goes.

i like twelvebar's idea.
i have one of each and i tend to like the strat better. the strat seems more loose and free while my tele seems more stiff and formal.

my strat and tele couch potatoes (thought i should give yall some GAS)

Both, though I've got a strat not a tele.

If I could only have one, I'd prefer my Tele. But I agree with everyone that having both is the way to go.

Well, I voted Strat because I already have one, but I'm hoping for a Tele next time. Reading my original post again, that probably wasn't clear - sorry about that..

I have two Strats and one Tele. I favor Strats because of the whammy bar, and I dislike Tele neck pickups.

*Though Don Mare wound a Tele neck pup for me that fits in the Tele neck hole, but it sounds like a Strat neck pup!! Best sounding Tele neck pickup ever!

I want a Nashville Tele, one with a strat pickup in the middle. I admit, I'm jonesing for a strat though, I want the whammy bar. I've got a tele, though, and it's great.

If they had a Nashville Tele with a whammy, that'd be my guitar.

Well I have 4 of each and there are things I love better on each model. The Tele is by far more comfortable to play as the knobs are away from the bridge and there are no middle pup to hit when picking which are the biggest annoyances of anyone that has played on for years has when they play a Strat. The Strat is more versatile plus it has a trem and offers more tonal options besides feeling more comfortable body wise.

I love both guitars and could not live without either one and if I had to choose I narrowly would of picked a Tele. But since this is about the tenth time I mentioned the mod of removing the tone knob and pot and rewiring my Strat it is now the ultimate ax. I guess a hybrid of the best of both worlds.

I dont know about Jimi but Clapton, Beck and Page all started on Teles first. I also love what John 5 and Ritchie Kotzen have been doing, shredding on Teles and showing just what you can do with them, and both guys have great signature Teles though I wish John would of put a more normal headstock on his.
