Personally I LOVE all kinds of horror movies. But, the only ones that keep me on the edge of my seat are ones that "could" be real. 2 perfect examples are:

The Strangers & Vacancy

Well all my favorites have been named so I will say that the only movie that made me feel uneasy walking home after seeing it was the first Haloween. John Carpenter hit the nail on the head and you only see like three killings in the whole movie. When the body counts get ridicules so does the movie.

The Prophecy and Constantine are both awesome movies. Also, did any one say Devil's Advocate yet? It is also very great.

A lot of cool stuff mentioned already, but 2 (actually 3) of my faves that have not already been mentioned:

The Beyond by Lucio Fulci...(aka Seven Doors of Death) and also Fulci's The House By The Cemetery, which has some bad audio dubbing, but is apparent it was an influence for Rob Zombies House of 1000 Corpses.

Cannibal Holocaust

I think that paranormal activity over did the "its what you don't see" thing. You have to see SOMETHING.

I like the Saw series but in terms of true classics you can't beat Psycho (original), Texas Chainsaw Massacre (original) and The Exorcist which I saw at a cinema when it was rereleased and it completely terrified me. Psychological headf**k.

I've seen the original psycho, didn't scare me one bit....I actually though it was very boring :?

Psycho is a character study.

Oh God how I wish someone would make a horror film based on real life events. Take in point Zodiac. Pretty good film, based on actual events. It may not be an accurate portrayal because of how it tries to pin down one guy as the Zodiac, even though the DNA did not match, but it does creep you out that these crimes really happened.

In some cases, using the actual scenes to shoot the movie, at the right time of day, at the right time of year. Genuinely creepy stuff.

To me, that is a horror movie. Its not the blood, its not the killing, its the atmosphere.

+1
