My sis is asking me what to get me for my birthday, and she wants to get something for my guitar. I'm not sure what to say. I have the basics for a beginner (straps, strings, winder/cutter, books, tuner, cleaner, a small distortion pedal, picks, etc.)
I don't want to get anything too expensive because we don't have the cash due to dad's illness.

I was thinking about a music stand. I really want an upgraded amp but that's way out of the budget, and I can't justify it yet since I'm not playing all that well yet. Maybe some Fender clothing? ;)

EDIT: I was also thinking of a hand exerciser and a capo. What are good capos for an electric guitar? I have one but it's for my classical, and I don't think it'll work with my fender. (I use nylon strings on my classical)

Any suggestions would be great. Thanks.

LVA,

Personally, 'have no use for capo and heard bad stuff about hand exercisers. The best one has a neck and body, strings and pickups and plugs into your amp, in this opinion.

A music stand is an excellent thought. The "pole frame" orchestral types with sort of crinkly black finish rather than a cheapie chrome folder are way preferable.

Best of fortune and prayers for your dad.

Thanks. I'll pass it to dad. :D

Can you post a pic of what one of these would look like? I'm trying to picture it but not quite getting it. Thanks.

Danelectro makes some pretty cheap pedals, they don't stand up to the rigors of being on the road as they have plastic shells but they sound very funky. There is also a guitar maintenance kit from Cruz tools it's called the Groove Tech guitar player kit I don't know the cost but it has every tool a guitarist needs for adjustments and repairs. There are also wall mounting hangers for guitars made by apex electronics that are not too expensive.

Why not check on a good learning DVD that will help you with some new techniques.

If she wants to help you become a better player, what I think every guitar player(actually every musician,), especially a beginner needs, that i didn't see on your list was a good metronome. In my opinion learning to play in time is the single most important skill. If you can't keep proper time, you will have a devil of a time trying to play with other people.

LVA,

How about either a guitar stand or wall hanger?

LVA I forgot to mention the Vox AMPlug they're around $50 and allow you to practice quietly with headphones on,they come in several configurations,I have the AC30 and it does a decent job of replicating the AC 30,it also has an input so you can plug in an MP3 player CD etc. and jam along.
