I was just wondering what your opinions are on whether pop music will ever switch back to a focus on guitar-based music, or whether the synths will continue to reign for eternity. :D Just curious; I still have hope.

there are some pop bands that are guitar based (i.e. Lifehouse) but as for more bands like that are rare, it's all synths. And it will stay that way b/c it's selling and no one is gonna change.

I think at some point there is gonna be a major shift in the dynamic of popular music. I think rage against the X factor proved that rock music is still top dog.
I'm hoping my generation are going to be the ones that shift things, I'd love to be a part of that.

no.... if someone isnt half naked and semi-retarded its not music anymore..... our society seems to be spiraling into its own death.... through all of the anti drug and anti sex its seems like its being driven into just that.... a wasteland of junkies and 10 year old mothers.... just my opinion though

but here's the thing, people aren't. It's all about money. If they change their sound, there's a chance that people won't buy it anymore and they're not gonna change it.

I think we will never see a day where guitars rule music again. The younger generations of teens and kids, hell even kids in their 20's are so easily entertained they could care less about hearing real music. Crap like Kanye West, Lady Gaga, Beyonce and Keesha suits them just fine. I feel sorry for these kids.

I'd rather not have enough guitars in popular music than for having every song over-saturated with constant guitar leads that have no meaning and just focus on speed and technicality. To be honest I wish there were no guitars in popular music, because popular music is usually never the best music, and that way we might discover some new things artistically about this instrument that hasn't had something new happen to it in a long time.

I don't regard anyone who relies on sampling, programmed synth tracks etc. as musicians. These Pseudo-musicians as named in posts above would be lost if they had to rely on their own musical know-how to record or play a song. There will always be a place for traditional instruments for serious musicians unfortunately poseurs and wankers have come front and center for now with any luck the listening audience will eventually smarten up and see these clowns for what they are..PR created bimbos who look pretty and would sound horrible if not for studio tricks and embellishment.

Kind of funny when you think that the guitar is the most popular instument in the world and more guitars are sold worldwide today then at anyother time. If a song is good it could be driven by a kazoo and sell. A fact is that one band that would not even rate to get flamed on the forum -The Jonas Brothers of who I could not even name a song of and our favorite flame boy John Mayer probably are responsible for making more teenagers want to play guitar than anyone else. I was home the other day and put on MTV for the first time in about 10 years while in bed and listened to what music is out there and was surprised how sugary and poppy it is besides every 3 out of 4 songs were by girls, with 1 of the songs sounding like a ripoff of the same song done by 10 different girls. I can remember in the 90s people wishing Grunge would just go away well the saying be careful what you wish for never rang truer.

for the record, i don't care if pop music ever uses guitars or not.

i have tons of great guitar music around, and thanks to the great folks here on the forum, i am discovering artists i never knew of.

sonny landreth and tommy emmanuel- just a few artists i discovered in the last several years. i would rather listen to these artists 24/7 than try to listen to that drivel called pop music these days

I am really confident there will be a time when guitar based music will be all over the Top 20. These things run in circles.
Oasis interrupted more than a decade of synths domination of British charts in 1995 and brought back guitar bands in a big way.
Things come and go, sometimes guitar driven music is favoured by the mainstream, sometimes not. So what?
There will always be great guitar music being made and that's what matter the most.
By the way, second best selling album of all times is AC/DC's "Back In Black (also best selling album of a band). Third place is taken by Pink Floyd's "Dark Side Of The Moon". Even the #1 selling album of all times, "Thriller" has some very memorable guitars on it (Eddie Van Halen and Steve Lukather anyone?).
So, my answer is yes, the guitar ain't going anywhere and is not likely to be replaced by anything.

I really think that musical trends are cyclical and just as the synths came in and took over they will fade and guitars will rise to prominence again. I think that's how it goes.

But as it's been said, half naked skanks and morons who look good are where the $$ is right now.
