Fly By Night. It's one of the best they put out. 8)

You can't go wrong with 2112 and A Farewell to Kings!

I am a Rush nut. The thing with Rush is that ... and this is why they are amazing ... every album they made was good. Never a klunker. Even their very first album, even without Neil Peart, is great. But Rush always evolves as a band. The previous posters said 2112 and A Farewell to Kings. Actually, this is a great suggestion, but there are no wrong answers. 2112 was the album that first made them. It is also my personal favorite; I have a litho of the album artwork framed in my office, signed by the band. It was their fourth album, and they had not seen much commercial success. So with all this record-company pressure to put out shorter songs, they go the other direction with the 2112 suite, which ended up being a big success. And AFTK has Xanadu and Cygnus X-1 ... two of Rush's extended classics.

I would also suggest Moving Pictures and Permanent Waves. But stay away from the live material. The live Rush I will listen to is All the World's A Stage (their first one) ... but even that is not for the novice Rush listener (although to be clear, Rush is great in concert). Stay with the studio albums. for sure ...

I would suggest getting ALL of their albums. Great band! Most people arent aware that Neil Peart did the majority of the song writing.

Not quite right. Peart writes all the lyrics, while Geddy & Alex write the music and melodies.

Too right GT! That was what I meant in less than clear terms. Either way, Rush is IMO the most brilliant trio ever!

Let me help you out with this, I am an avid Rush fan:

* Rush (1974)
* Fly by Night (1975)
Caress of Steel (1975)
* 2112 (1976)
* A Farewell to Kings (1977)
* Hemispheres (1978)
* Permanent Waves (1980)
* Moving Pictures (1981)
* Signals (1982)
Grace Under Pressure (1984)
Power Windows (1985)
Hold Your Fire (1987)
Presto (1989)
Roll the Bones (1991)
Counterparts (1993)

There are more recordings but I kind of fell out of finding new music from them.

A * indicates must haves

the red is my edit. That album contains arguably my favorite RUSH song:

Distant early Warning

No offense meant to Rkreisher, but that song alone makes the price of the album to me. :wink:

None taken. Like I said, I am an avid Rush fan and have a lot of their music in my collection including that CD. Love the fact you chose a Vid with Alex playing a Strat.

Glad I read this thread. I've only got about 1/2 this list!

See if I can do my part to help end the recession. Go buy some new - old tunes.

Others will no doubt argue, but I think 2112, Overture through the Grand Finale was/is the best "classic" heavy metal ever written. Disagree? Go listen to it again . . . simply amazing. Sadly, I was never able to hear 2112 [Overture -> Grand Finale] in its entirety live. Just pieces. Probably cuz it's 20:34 long.

Can't compare it to a different genre, it's not modern, nu, or grunge. But for "classic" heavy metal rock, I think Rush is hard to beat.

As a huge Rush Fan i would say maybe start out with Exit Stage Left.

(funny story behind that album... my buddy back in highschool hated Rush even though he played bass. So for christmas I gave him that album and some party favors and he called me a few ours later baked and with a new favorite band)

That is a fantastic live album recorded on the Moving Pictures tour so you will cover your need to hear them live, plus an excellent sample of their work up until 1980. Then i'd move on to 2112, A Farewell to Kings, and Hemispheres if you want to delve into their 70s prog rock phase.

As far as the more modern stuff goes, my favorite is Counterparts. They did away with the excessive keyboards and returned to their roots of just plain rock. Alex's guitar work on this album is among my favorite since Moving Picuteres

Favorite songs of mine from various albums include.

Moving Pictures - The Camera Eye
Hemispheres - La Villa Strangiato
A Farewell to Kings - Cygnus XI
Permanent Waves - Natural Science
