Funny you mentioned budget guitars, I had a Tele that was made in China. I don`t have it anymore and upgraded to a Hwy 1. I had no problems with it and it sounded decent. My issues were with the frets, they were too rough along the edges and thats why I sold it.

I could be totally wrong about this but the way I figure it, with this lousy collective world economy we are all victims of (save for a select few), it is really going to get to the point where most of us MUST do with the least and oftentimes, eclectic out of sheer necessity. So, if someone comes across a, "Skunkfart XJ-13 Cosmos Amp" made by who knows who back in the early 60's where for all its flaws, this amp just so happens to sound like say, a cranked, Sunn Coliseum amp (Remember these, fellow old farts?), this shall happily be their #1 amp in spite of all else currently out there. It is a sign of the times. YMMV.

Big Jay,on Monday past I played an Epi 59 Les Paul Reissue and was amazed by the sound and feel,it was truley an incredible guitar I almost bought it but decided on the Jimmy Vaughn Strat instead but it was a hard choice as I have no Les Pauls and 4 Strats but for $1,100 it was a bargain, after playing the Epi I wouldn't even consider plunking down $3000+ for a Gibson as I can't see how it could possibly sound, feel and look beter than this cutie.

Well, I've been infatuated with the '59 LPs for some time. Obviously Im not buying a legit '59, but I've dreamed of buying a Gibson '59 Reissue VOS, which costs $3500-$4200. I dont like spending this much money on anything. So, what? Im going to sit around without a vintage LP burstbucker sound? (Yeah, Nevin, I like the vintage sound, but you dont need vintage gear to get the vintage sound).

Anyway, I bought this for $129.00.....new....$200 with case.

http://www.rondomusic.com/callistobk.html

Let me tell you, this SX LP-Knockoff sound amazing. It sounds very much like the '59 LP RI VOS I played at GC just a couple weeks ago. Not kidding. Its this guitar sounds like the '50 RI I want for only $129. Im very happy about that. It will certainly fill the hole until I get stupid enough to spend $4000 on a real Gibby.

Not only does it sound great. But it plays very well...STRAIGHT OUT OF THE BOX. Not kidding. The only think I did was lower the bridge just a touch. Literally.

Now, here's were the cheapo guitar comes through...It struggles to stay in tune. The tuners are complete garbage. Next, the tone/volume pots are garbage. The crackle right out of the box and they are not straight. The dials wobble like a lopsided top. Next, Im getting some type of residue on my fingers when I play. It might be finish from the fingerboard or maybe its coming from the fretwire. Its made in China, so Im a little concerned about what kind of chemicals Im in contact with, but...

It sounds awsome. Especially through my vintage Fender amp!

The Agile LP knockoff from Rondo are even better than the Sx. Seriously, they are super super quality in the craftsmanship and they blow the pants off an Epi LP.

Whoa, wait a bit:

'You saying somebody who DOESN'T use the same deodorant, toothpaste, toilet paper, soap, underwear brand, degree of frayed-ness of same brand of jeans and worn-ness of boots, hair colour and style and type of hatband and which buttons on their shirt are undone...

...(and of course, the same gear)...

... and DOESN'T eat and drink the same foods as their heroes and had the same childhood dieases and did good/bad at the same subjects in school and grow up in the same climate, if not geographical area...

...could feasibly get the same great tone as their heroes?

That is preposterous.

Ain't no way.

I'm afraid so JSJH. I guess these guys knew what they were talking about :D :

When I'm watchin' my TV and a man comes on and tell me
How white my shirts can be
But, he can't be a man 'cause he doesn't smoke
The same cigarettes as me

Guess I'm a tone snob. But still happy, I get compliments on my tone, thanks to my GEAR! But I don't think it matters if the gear is high end or low end, I know guitarist that can make anything sound great. Wish I had their skill. I think 90% of good tone is in their fingers. Great post !!!

Yes, I get pricey amps, Marshall, Fender, and such, but my main stage is still the Squier Jagmaster. I did modify it, but just wanted pickups with less muddiness. Just a preference. No overdrive pedal, just a boost pedal. The tones from amps are good enough. I don't know if I have ever ran across snobbery, except when it came to Les Paul people. Screw them. I got a Chinese copy and replaced the pickups and ZING! Stays in tune better than the real thing

Forgot one important thing.

-Anything Vintage Must Be Awesome
Dude, my guitar was made with a spokeshave carved by Moses himself! It is awesome. Oh, was yours made with CNC machinery capable of unbelievable accuracy? Must be crap.

While I will give some credit to vintage gear (I am a collector myself) most pieces are not that great. The biggest difference being wood quality, mostly on acoustic instruments. But just because it is old, does not mean it is good.

I have a good idea for a thread concerning Stradivarius violins and how they were modified over the years (and people still think they are great).

+1. I think there are a lot of unjustifiable snobbery concerning vintage gear. Especially in the cases of amps and effects pedals. Granted, there is a lot of awesome old equipment out there (for example: I just had the opportunity to try out an old Maestro Parametric Filter pedal from the 70s which produced a really nice overdrive tone), but in most cases I think people are paying an awful lot of money for old electronics (which are probably more likely to break down than their modern counterparts).

I'd bet none of your "finger" guitarist can make a Gretch Black Falcon sound like a Robert Cray Signature series.

Good point.
