Scales can be used as a passage within a melody or to link two licks or phrases together. That is the art of a good shredder.

If I had to listen to shredding I would want to hear John Petrucci, though not the fastest, he does it clean.

I saw this kid named Michael Angelo Batio that was very good. Check him out if you get a chance. Not my style of music, but he impressed me a lot.

I don't understand why people think they can only enjoy one sort of solo style. Why even mention people like David Gilmore in this thread? What does he have to do with shredding? Why does it have to turn into a competition of shredding versus slower solo styles? And I think it is far from the truth to say that shredding is emotionless. Ever listen to Steve Vai or Chris Broderick? I hear plenty of emotion there. And it is extremely arrogant and ignorant in my opinion to say that shredding isn't musical. And I also really hate it when people say it takes no talent or skill, since to put it quite plainly, it requires quite a bit.

Anyway on the topic, my favorites in no particular order:
Paul Gilbert
Chris Broderick
Steve Vai
Joe Satriani
Yngwie Malmsteen
John Petrucci
Alexi Laiho
