I'm trying to learn slide, but I'm not a big fan of alternate tunings. Do you know of anyone who plays in standard tuning? I guess I mainly thinking of blues guitarists, but recommendations for any style is fine. :)

George Harrison comes to mind first, Eric clapton does, Duane Allman,... Alot of major key solos are done in standard tuning...its not as hard as you would think. If you can play something with your fingers, you can play it with a slide.

Muddy Waters played a lot in standard tuning, especially in his later years. Enjoy your playing and the hat. :)

Warren Haynes plays just about everything in standard. He had a great Hot Licks dvd on slide that you should be able to find as the are all reissued.

Hi TGS: me likewise.

I saw Buddy Whittington on a Guitarist magazine DVD demo some tasty slide playing in standard tuning and I believe I understood him to be indicating that is what he uses most or all of the time.

Nice player - dunno if his stuff appeals to you?

I noticed he uses the methadone bottle slide - is that a crucial element? (I doubt it...)

Rory Gallagher played many slide solos in standard tuning. Cradle rock from the Irish Tour album springs to mind.

another player would be Elvin Bishop

Rory used standard? hmm, i guess i've only seen videos where he uses open tunings and a capo.

i find its best to get away from the box approach when you play slide in standard. rely heavily on your ear, and make good use of single or 2-string runs. that's when it'll be most effective. playing slide in the pent. box can be very choppy.

I only play in standard tuning because when I was learning slide MANY years ago, I surely couldn't afford another guitar and even if I could, I had no clue about the whole alternate tuning thing. Besides, I would have thought that to be a form of 'cheating' along the lines of tuning a guitar to say, an open E chord and then just using my first finger to barre all over the place to get my different key chords.

Ha - it has finally just occurred to me why Forum user Orvilleowner has that doubleneck Strat with six strings on each neck. It's so he can tune one to open E major and one to open E minor. Then he can do ALL his playing with just one finger of the left hand.

Smart! :D

Cheers - C
