The album he did sucked, except fr a couple of songs, but Ian Gillan has an incredible voice--even now.

I went with Dio as I never heard Ian with them. I have a DVD of Purple doing a show in 73 and I have to give him credit for inventing that heavy metal scream as I have yet to hear anyone do it before that.

As much as I like Ian Gillan with Deep Purple, Sabbath to me means Ozzy.

A Rolling Stone review of Deep Purple's Machine Head album referred to it as "real heavy-metal music." This was the first use of the term. So not only did Ian Gillan invent the heavy-metal scream, he invented heavy metal!

Dio, though he was a pale shadow of Ozzy, as every other singer in that band has been.

Theres only one OzMan. Hate to say it but Sabbath had a tendency to dissapear up their own posterior when left in the sole command of Iommi.

Also Judas Priest, am I the only one who thinks they were far stronger than Sabbath on a album to album comparison. Yeah Sabbath wrote classic singles, utterly unbeatable. But Priest released consistently good strong albums from the first track to the last.

Hands down it is Ronnie James Dio ... HOWEVER, they were much better in the studio than live. I saw them on the Mob Rules tour. It sucked. No one on the stage moved more than two steps the whole gig, and Dio kept preaching how we need to follow Satan, because that was evidently what was "cool" at the time. Oy vey ...is it time to go yet? By the contrary, Ozzy's gigs with my man Randy were rocking (saw Rhoades live twice).

Although Black Sabbath was best with Ozzy, I also liked the albums with Ronnie and Ian. Between the two, Ronnie James Dio was better in my opinion. Love the songs Sign of the Southern Cross and Heaven and Hell.

I'm gonna say none of 'em. I'm a purist when it comes to Sabbath, Ozzy made the band, I stopped listening after

Not that I'm a monumental fan of Black Sabbath but to me, there's certain irreplaceable members in certain bands. Ozzie in Sabbath is one just like Keith Moon in the Who is another, Mercury in Queen, Morrison in The Doors and the list goes on and on. Without these key players, as far as I'm concerned, the remainder of their bands are different bands entirely even if they are doing all their same material. YMMV.

Has somebody been watching That Metal Show? lol...

I wouldn't put Halford on the list, yes he filled in for a few shows, but was not on any albums....To me thats like including Brad Gillis and Joe Holmes on "Favorite guitarist Ozzy worked with since leaving Black Sabbath" poll list... Yes both men are talented players, but their time with Ozzy, just like Halfords time with Sabbath, was only for a few live shows, or tours in the case of Gillis and Holmes, but no studio albums...Yes Speak of the Devil features Brad Gillis but that was a live album of mainly Sabbath covers...

#BBC4 are having a metal night. Loads of classic Paul Di'anno era maiden clips and great footage of budgie and diamond head etc.

Bill Ward was on not 3 minutes ago saying that Sabbath to him is only ever Ozzy, Iommi, Butler and himself. Not using that to bolster my point of view. Butler himself acknowledges their appalling treatment of Dio (who I rate). Theres only one Sabbath though.

Dio is the only voice for Sabbath that has been good. The dude has the ultimate metal voice IMPO.

Straycat, give Deep Purple's Machine Head a listen if you want to hear Ian Gillian at his absolute best. What a classic............ 8) Mike
