I participate in a monthly group jam and we try a different genre each month to expand our knowledge.

This month it's celtic music and/or Irish songs. Now I've played several of the Irish songs, mostly the Drunken Sailors, The Wild Rovers, and other traditional.

I've heard and like Celtic Woman, but looking for some unique celtic songs that involve some of these instruments :

http://www.ceolas.org/instruments/

Any listening recommends also appreciated!

Than Q
/Mike

Hi Mike,Celtic Music is huge here as 95+% of the population is of Celtic extraction(that is a fact) most of the instruments listed are used here as much as they are in Ireland and the British Isles. If you google Newfoundland Music you'll find a wealth of traditional Celtic music. We have groups worth looking into such as The Irish Descendants,The Masterless Men,Figgy Duff*****Excellent Newfoundland folk heroes,Connemara,The Celtic Connection ,The Fables, the list goes on and on.Anyway I'll have a look around and try to get some links from some of my musical friends. There are 2 record stores that have a huge inventory of Newfoundland and Celtic music they are O'Briens Music in St. John's NL and Fred's Records also in St. John's I believe they both have websites.Gord O'Brien is a virtual encyclopedia of Celtic music,he was my next door neighbour for years(he can also play anything with strings)I'm sure he'd be glad to help you if you got in touch with him.

Hey Mike,

"A while ago" in metro Chicago there was a duo named Privateer who did sea songs-ish stuff in an Irish fashion. If you can find either of their albums, they are worth it.

I know its Paul McCartney so not necessarily a traditional celtic song but its one of my favorites. And a family favorite us being of Scottish origin. Not to get sappy, but my father actually passed away to this song so done by a Scottish folk singer so it has much sentimental value.

You should give Phil Coulter a try. He is amazing, especially a song about Derry called The Town I Loved So Well.

Hi mike,I've done a bit of digging and found the websites to O'Briens and Fred's Records O'Brien's site is www.obriens.nf.ca and their email is
obriensmusic@nl.rogers.com as I said Gord O'Brien is a walking encyclopedia of Celtic music history and artists and loves nothing more than finding someone else who shares his passion,he's a gifted multi-instrumentalist also.Tell him his old neighbour Derek sent you.The website for Fred's is: www.freds.nf.ca I hope these sites are a help,Gord O'Brien is definitely worth looking up.
