I haven't been around too much lately. I've been playing a lot of shows and my band HaleAmano is in the studio recording our 12-song demo. Just thought I'd stop by and let everyone know what's going on.

We are done with Drums and Rhythm Guitars, and we're 13-hours ahead of schedule. For those who have been through it, that's pretty good. We're having a great time, and things are going smoothly.

Image

This is the amp spread we're working with. We move them around, and use a couple for reverb chambers. One will be dry, while the others are providing other tones and reverb levels.

This was my setup:
Image
Image
I used the DeVille for my dry channel, Roland and '85 for reverb right and left. The other guitar player went with the 85 for dry and DeVille and Roland for reverb right and left. We ended up with some really cool differences between us for the tracks.

Image
Our guitar spread. 2-Squiers, an Epiphone and a Hamer. Of course there was one used that isn't in this pic. But between these guitars and the amp spread, we had a whole lot to work with tone-wise. All of these guitars performed beautifully.

Image
We had a little fun with a little Marlboro amp for an intro. We wanted a transistor radio sound, and it didn't disappoint. Very cool little gadget.

Image
We have a BBQ every session. It just makes us feel at home which is important when recording. It can take a lot of the seriousness and edge away. If it doesn't feel like a party, then it doesn't suit us very well.

I have a couple of songs that I wrote and sing in this band. So I just couldn't be without my '57RI for those recordings. It was my first electric guitar. I've had it for 25-years now. It has it's share of battle scars, but really performed like a champ. In my opinion, it still has the best tone of all of my guitars. Is it just me, or is the hand on the back wall telling me I have a big nose??

Ryan giving you all a Shaka between tracks.

Image

IZ getting his burger between tracks. You can't beat having a BBQ during a recording session. It really does help a lot and I highly recommend it. When people are happy and fed, it shows in the recordings.
Image

Anyway.. That's what I've been up to. We've been playing shows between the recordings too, so it's a very busy time for all of us. I'll be sure to keep you guys posted on our progress. The tracking is going good so far. Wish us luck!!

PEACE!!

Are you sure that you are not secretly James Hetfield?? Has any one seen you and James at the same place? If not, I am suspicious ...

Hahaha. Yea, I get that a lot. I've even been asked to do Metallica tribute bands before. I do a great impression of JH. In one of my old bands, the drummer and I used to do "Sad But True" just to have fun with it.

Riley, the studio belongs to a Las Vegas band called Black Camaro. We're paying a flat fee of $1,500 to record the demo. 7-members, 12-songs, that's a decent price.

I'd have to admit, this is a little more intense than home recording. But we know the songs pretty good, so it becomes more about who can do the most 1-takes. Hahaha. I think Ryan is winning so far. He did his rhythms for all 12 songs in 5 1/2-hours. Our drummer did it in 6, we all did our recordings without scratch-tracks. We kind of made a game out of it with no pressure. But when each person was done, we would all sit back and say, "wow, that's pretty amazing what just happened. Any Steak left?"

Anyway, we have sessions coming up tomorrow, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, with a show on Saturday. So, yea, pretty busy. But I'll post some more pics as we go along.

I have some nice memories of studios and making demos too. I still have mine and their on 45`s made in the Ed Sullivan Building in NYC in the 60`s. Have fun with it, you`ll always look back on these days and smile.

I want to thank everyone for all of the kind words. We really are having fun. Today was another nice day at the studio.

Today was Bass track day. Which was refreshing. After sessions of just guitar and drums, it was nice to hear the back-bone pull the songs together. The importance of Bass in Reggae is huge. It's the instrument that REALLY makes people want to move. So what a great day.

Image

Yesterday, Ryan bought a Squier deluxe active Jazz bass V. It really does sound good. Juan really hasn't played on a 5-string, but he tuned it up and went on a test run with a Fender Bass amp. Something just didn't seem to be right. It wasn't the Bass, but.. The sound was just kind of flat. Not a whole lotta warmth.

Not only was there a flat sound, the neck on the Bass was REALLY loosening up. The action was high, and it needed a setup.

So the producer pulled out a Fender P-Bass:
Image

Now we had to find out a way to warm up the sound, and also try to match the active sound we had with the Squier. So I dug into my pedal bag and pulled out a couple of pedals. We hooked the Bass up through the pedals, ran it direct into the board as well as using the amp. When we heard the direct sound our eyes just lit up. We decided to ditch the amp altogether.

So this ended up being our Bass sound for the whole album.
Image

We ran the P-Bass through a Seymour Duncan Pickup Booster, then into an Aphex Guitar Exciter and ran it through the DI Balanced Out to the board. We were all just kind of shocked by the sound. It's just not something that was planned or that we would normally think about. But we couldn't deny what our ears were hearing. It sounded freaking amazing!! So there you go.. Go figure. It worked beautifully.

Image

By the look on Juan's face, he was really happy with it too. And he just breezed through the tracks. It was obvious he was a lot more comfortable with the 4-string. I will say this though, the Squier has a great sound too. It just hadn't been set-up yet.

Of course, there was that part of the day.. Yep. It was that time again.

Image

You knew it was going to happen.

So there it is. Another day in the studio, the songs sound great. I can't wait 'till everyone hears our songs. It's still going to be a while, but it's going to be really cool when that time comes.
