I have a crate with a single 12 inch speaker. This is my performing amp and it works great except for one thing, it doesnt have a line out so I can plug into my bands mixer. I need to purchase a mic to mic my amp but don't know what to buy. My band is usually cramped together so it needs to be a close proximity mic so that it doesn't pick up other amps. Any Ideas

The Shure SM57. Used by damn near everyone. Perfect for micing your amp.

The Heil PR30 is creating a lot of buzz these days (the good kind). It's range is like a 57's but with a bit more depth and a warmer top end -- no kidding. It looks like a broadcast booth mic -- use it on stage and the guitarists in the crowd will definitely come up and ask you about it during the breaks!

Try a Sennheiser e906 Instrument Microphone. It works nicely for me.

SM57 is the standard when it comes to microphones for you amp. They are super durable also. I have dropped mine tons of times and spilt soda on it and it is still working great. The senheiser e609 and e906 are both solid also.

Yup, SM58s for vocals, SM57s for instruments.

Try different positions, but generally centered on the speaker cone is a good starting point. Moving it from central will give different sound - try it and see what suits you. (PS: beware of buying cheap SM58/57s from eBay etc - they're Chinese copies!)

yep those are some excellent choices in the Shure selection!
But I'd go for Senheiser! :D
