apparently this has been going on for years. i never knew until now. never heard of it.

technically the base argument makes sense, but i see this as a way of twisting things just to make some cash. corruption at its best.
i'm sure the same artists who complain have been just as guilty.

i feel inclined to just sell my gear now, because all hope has washed away from my shores.

well, dont give up on your personal material. this topic bears bad news only for bands who play cover material. there is nothing wrong about playing original songs you wrote in a bar. the companies are only concerned about the use of copyrighted material for "profitable means". they couldn't have any influence on your own material, and frankly, if you don't sound like the corporate garbage spit out by Disney, the industry probably couldn't give a damn about your songs anyway, so you're in the clear! woo-hoooo

i've actually been longing to pursue my own material. its just been difficult to find the right people interested in what i'm doing. plus, i can't help but to love makin some extra cash playing some bar tunes. its sad, but the demand today is Top 40 and other such crap. thats what bar owners want and will hire. to their dismay, it may also get them slammed.

what i hope to be the conclusion: maybe now bar owners will seek more original artists.

though, i still see no excuse for this to be thrown up in our faces. case in point; i bet no one knows that "Hey Joe" is actually not a Hendrix tune. eat it Janie.

grunge huh? you talking about stuff like STP, Pearl Jam, Silverchair, Screaming Trees, Alice in Chains?...and yes Nirvana. (i know that's just scratching the surface...)

i actually would love to bring back the early 90's in a heartbeat. its one of the avenues i could go down. grunge, and also the alternative side as well. that was a great time in music. i'm 24, so i grew up with that sound. i'm not too far ahead of you.

not exactly grunge, but im a big Gin Blossoms fan. their peak was a little before people caused pop music to turn for the worst. i love how they made jaded lyrics sound happy. genius. though i guess Pink Floyd's been there, done that. another great band, though not exactly grunge

i'm actually realizing i probably lean more to the alt-rock side...sorry to dissappoint

copy and paste from another post of mine on this topic :

If your playing in a venue, the venue has already (if they are legal) paid an annual fee which covers your public performance of the song(s).

MySpace prohibits the uploading of copyrighted material. You can be subject to both civil and criminal charges. Practically speaking the worst thing that's likely to happen is that you would lose your MySpace account and your ip addy banned.

YouTube use to be a gray area, however now they are really cracking down. Google, the parent company of YouTube, has negotiated royalty payments with most of the organizations world wide which oversee copyright enforcement. Technically you still need permission. Currently, YouTube monitors content and only pulls material when requested by the copyright holder but it's happening quite frequently lately.

There are always the folks that will dispute the above, ("I've been doing it for years,"... " I know sites that have it up there right now" etc etc.) but that's simply because they have not been caught, yet.

I just like how some people of say how musicians never get properly compensated for their efforts, but then criticize the system that attempts to properly compensate musicians for their efforts...

this is insane! i played in wedding bands from 1966-1977. at that time, disco came in and dj's put us out of work. anyone who remembers the music scene will tell you the live music scene dried up . all the good clubs went disco.

the problem as i see it is simple. if it's going to cost the venue owner more money (and i don't know what the fees are) they will probably stop having live music.

i am trying to form a 60's/ classic rock band. after seeing this story, i am not sure i want to go forward. there are crowds that like to hear cover bands, and crowds that like to hear originals. looks that the cover crowd is going to lose.

This is plain ridicules. Usually I am all for the protection of artist rights but these are just cover bands in bars, sue them for $30,000 that is just insane.Growing up in Bklyn in the 60s and 70s there used to be bands playing in the streets at block parties all summer long and none of these crazy laws existed. I felt for Paul McCartney when he used to have to pay Michael Jackson to play his own songs in concert.

i have satellite radio in 2 cars. i now have to pay a royalty fee each month.

remember when you would listen to the radio, and hear a new song? you went out and bought the 45 or lp. wasn't the idea behind them being on the radio to get you to buy the music?

i don't know how they can enforce this. it sounds like they want to scare a few people, and see if everyone else gets scared, and fall in line.

do i owe a royalty if my band practices at my home, and someone hears it?

if my friends have have a party, and some of us get together and play, am i now a criminal?

years ago i quit peforming because of the b.s. way musicians were treated when disco became the rage. i wanted to play more now that my kids are grown, but i see that stupidity remains supreme.
