Since we have so many members of so many backgrounds and many who are obviously well read and/or educated I was wondering what other Forum members liked to read.Personally I read almost totally non fiction except for Kurt Vonnegut as I have read all his books several times over, my all time favourite is Breakfast Of Champions a hilarious satire on life in the 20th century.I also love anything written by Hunter S. Thompson especially Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas another hilarious book but a true account of a trip he and an attorney friend took to the legendary city. I recently read a book by John Geiger called The Third Man Factor a collection of true stories about people in situations of extreme hardship and often faced with death and how they felt a benevolent presence with them throughout the ordeal. The most famous instance was that of Ernest Shackleton the Antarctic explorer whose party all felt that another being was with them often guiding them and comforting them. This book is a riveting piece of work and certainly is thought provoking. So folks, read any good books lately?

For history, anything by David McCullough, Walter Isaacson, Russell Shorto, Simon Schama, and Howard Zinn
Fiction: Michael Connelly, James Doss, Walter Mosely, Randy Wayne White, James Lee Burke, Daniel Silva.

Two of my favorite books: A Winter's Tale by Mark Helprin and Forever by Pete Hamill, both very similar..magical realism like Marquez and oth taking place in New York over a long stretch of time.

I spend a lot of time reading reference books for work so I tend to go as far as I can the other way when I'm reading for pleasure. I like autobiographies (and some biographies) but also enjoy novels. Wilbur Smith, Stephen King (especially The Stand and the Dark Tower series) and John Grisham were the first ones to come to mind.

Also a big Vonnegut fan.I like Cat's Cradle(from which Joe Satrianni got the title of his track Ice-9),
I also really recommend ' A Confederacy of Dunces' by John Kennedy Toole

I just finished reading 'The Black Hole War: My Battle with Stephen Hawking to Make the World Safe for Quantum Mechanics' by Leonard Suskind great read, if you're into science.

I read a lot of Irvine Welsh (being Scottish will do that to ye!), also Dostoevsky, Mario Puzo, Paul Coelho, Salinger of course.

I have a big love for Neil Gaiman and Bill Bryson too.

Nerd alert here, but I have a huge box with his 'Sandman' comics, haven't read a lot of his novels though.

there used to be a lot of comic books in the tour van, back in the day. Touring Canada's prairies means a LOT of driving. Not like nowadays with in car DVD players and such.

Its when I was living and playing in New York I got turned on to it. The guy who ran our building had loads of Transformers comics which I love (G1 only) but once I'd finished those I started to borrow his Sandman just to go to sleep to with a 'smoke'. I was in heaven, completely lost in his world. After just finishing Crime and Punishment at the time it was just what the doctor ordered.
