Well, I saw Eric Clapton and Roger Daltrey last night here in Nashville. Absolutely wonderful show!! EC never ceases to amaze me. And all of the Daltrey criticism from the Super Bowl - you can forget it. He was on his game for sure - yeah, he strained a little hitting the high ones in Baba Oriley but he's 64 after all.

Eric only played his EC Grey strat for electric.
Vince Gill joined him for most of his acoustic set and the "Crossroads" encore.

Some interesting tidbits from random neuron firing:
Daltrey closed with Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire" - odd but compelling.
To my chagrin, Roger and Eric did not appear together at all.
No one introduced either act - they just strolled on stage and starting playing.
First time in quite a while I have seen Eric touring without a second guitarist. Which meant no electric "Layla" - oh well.
They had to almost physically give Roger Daltrey the hook, he did not want to stop at all.
And everyone on stage in Eric's show, except the backup singers, was old enough for it to look like a Geritol commercial.

My only two (minor) complaints:
Did not like the two ladies backing Eric. God, I miss Marcy Levy.
While I enjoy Vince Gill, Eric let him do all of the lead breaks on 3 songs of the acoustic set. I did not go to see Vince....

Roger's set list:
I Can See for Miles
Can you See the Real Me
Days of Light
Freedom Ride
Gimme a Stone
Behind Blue Eyes
Young Man Blues
Baba Oriley
Ring of Fire

Edit: Roger played Squeeze Box also.

Eric's set list:
Going Down Slow
Key to the Highway
Tell the Truth
Old Love
I Shot the Sheriff

then acoustic
Drifting Blues - then Vince arrives
Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out
Running On Faith
Layla
Rock and Roll Heart

back to electric
Badge
Little Queen of Spades (never notice before how much the intro sounds like Have You Ever Loved a Woman - or maybe Eric was trying to fool us)
Before You Accuse Me
Wonderful Tonight
Cocaine

Encore : Crossroads (w/Vince Gill)

Great show. Want to do it again tonight....

Really!! I'm going to see him on march 13th and I'm now depressed. I don't get to hear the Pop for the Layla riff? It's bad enough Roger Daltrey is there and I have nose bleed seats. I shot the sherrif? Ugh. I'm so glad I didn't pay for the ticket.

I guess it's something I can say I did, like river rafting and witnessing vaginal birth. Oh well.

Did Eric speak at all? I went to see him in 2004 or 5 and he didn't say a word the whole set.

He is still in my fab five.lol May of looked like a Geritol commercial but he always has the best players in his bands and I know the musicianship was impecable. I like and would of loved seeing him with Trucks and Doyle because there youth raised the bar a notch. Really shocking him and Daltrey did not do a song together.

Bad enough that Daltrey is there? He rocked. His band is tight and talented. You will be on your feet.

Yeah "I shot the Sheriff has never been one of my favorites either - and this is where the backup singers intruded, in my opinion. But Eric pulls out all the stops for a SIZZLING solo.

That is very true and he played very well. As I said it was a minor complaint (my lady says I just had to compain about something - she calls me a curmudgeon-in-training...)
And when Vince was playing Eric was grinning from ear to ear!

Interesting set list there. At lot of vintage Clapton. The makeup of the band can often dictated not only by the overall plan of the concert, but by who is available for an extended tour.

He said "Thank you" after nearly every song and introduced Vince as "Here's my very good friend Vince Gill". That was it.

FYI, Joe Bonamassa does the same thing. Just song to song to song.

Oh, yeah - they were good. The two keyboard guys traded licks back and forth and the rhythm section was incredibly tight and rock steady. That comment was no reflection on their talent or professionalism.

It just sometimes gets to me that most of my favorite musicians are old enough for Social Security!

Wow Clapton is just like "thanks for paying 60+bucks to see me" and that's all?? Jeez...

A close friend of mines best friend is a guitar tech for top tier acts and is seeing if he knows anybody working the tour to get us backstage access, that would make up for my many gripes I'll have after the concert.

I wish I was born earlier in a way...Woodstock...The Beatles...the glory days of my favorites like Page, Clapton, Slash, Santana, Dylan, Gallagher...the concept of Vinyl Records (I think they're awesome)...etc.

I know I have my generation's music but highlights are limited. I do really enjoy Derek Trucks, and I have a couple bands I'm into (Counting Crows, Foo Fighters, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Tom Petty)...but overall I wish I could've seen the legends in their youth and gotten the chance to grow up alongside them.

Unlax yourself and don't go all ishy-gooey with the rock nostalgia. As pointed out elsewhere, they weren't exactly parent's ideas of roll models. Looking back at vintage video of the mid-60's Rolling Stones, these 'yute' were considered "Pecks Bad Boys" while "The Beatles" were the nice boys you brought home to mama. :P :P :P Hard to believe, but true.
Probably the best thing going for your wishful thinking is that we weren't paying a kings' ransom for a ticket to a concert and, as Straycat will likely agree, a venue like The Filmore East or West, where you could get up close and personal with the talent, and everyone had their asses nailed to a seat, was far better than the prices we pay today for seats with oxygen supplementation or a view of the back of someone's head instead of the stage.

Doc

I totally agree about the tickets Chief. I wasn't trying to go all nostalgic...it just seems like a better era musically (maybe because it was the start of rock and roll).
