Don't get me wrong. I do not "hate" texting unless I see someone in a vehicle trying to do it while also driving. However, I do not shorthand my texting any more than I shorthand my posts.

To my point... I text my children frequently for messages I do not feel are pressing or warrant a full-blown phone call. They are both enrolled in PHD programs at separate universities and I can never tell when they might be in a meeting or just do not wish to be interrupted.

I just had to add the word "texting" to my spell check dictionary so it would stop flagging it in my post!

The short answer is yes......and it's getting worse with each new generation. Here's what the daughter of a girl i went to school with 21 years ago has posted on her Facebook profile:

"Dis is for all d noisy lil f*ckers on me page dat dnt knw me im lee mad as a hatter... sure ye wud ave t b t live in dis place haha. i love going ou d weekends wi me mates on a mad one haha wi me tripple aftershock.earth is me church d dj is me god.x"

How retarded is this? If it was my daughter i'd have her enrolled in englis classes ASAP!

Sad.

It definitely is. When I correct papers for my class, I see a lot of texting shortcuts and I deduct points for it. It is frustrating to see the ability to write going downhill. Many of my students think that writing 2 paragraphs is too much work.

I was reading a profile of a woman on a dating website last night and it was completely in texting shorthand. I was tempted to write back saying how lousy her profile was, but I didn't.

Personally I think it has had an affect on spelling. I text often and don't use all of those abbreviations.

I write text messages the same way I type.

...I don't send many text messages.

I am the same way. I spell out everything. I have gotten faster, but you can only go so fast using the number pad for the letters. My wife has one of those keyboards on her phone, but I find it too small and hit several letters at the same time.

For me the extra speed that someone gets in sending a message to me is lost while I'm translating it. If you want speed then call me (or ask me to call you). If you want to use a different language when you communicate with me, use music :)

It really bothers me when I see someone post on an internet forum using "text-speak". It comes across to me as utterly lazy. If you can't take the time to type out the word "you" instead of "u" ... Now that's lazy.

For myself I've found it to be much faster to speed dial the person i'm needing, ask the question or make the statement, get the responce and be finished in the time it takes me to figure out all of this texting nonsence. Now if i'm sending something to multiple people then a text would be faster and easier. Some people would rather text just because it's the "in" thing to do. Not me no way. I guess i'm too old fashioned in my ways.
