Hello fellow Forumites;

I was just reading a post and it looks like straight texting. In 20 years is this an example of formal writing?

H-a dude w/d? R U goin 2 the show? can't w8 to see U. rk

I know I use some internet short cuts like ROFL or LOL, but some times I just cannot make out the meaning of some acronyms.

absolutely- not on this sight- most posters can spell and write complete sentences.

when i see a blog, or read responses that are posted to online articles, i am appalled. the are sentences that make no sense, major spelling errors, and since many of these have names hidden, you see a lot of nastiness. just look up som articles on tim tebow, and see what some people say about him.

i know, i'm starting to sound like my dad...

it's not affecting my spelling at all. i don't even text the shorthand way, just lol, rotfl, etc... you know, the normal stuff.

it seems to me that fender.com's community are pretty well spoken, generally. as for people's spelling in general, i don't think texting affects things too much.

I actually just read an article a few months ago that said there is no affect. If I remember correctly the facts were based off of the results of standardized testing given in schools.

I absolutely think that IM and texting are both affecting spelling. My neice is an average student in grade 7 but her spelling leaves much to be desired.

Personally I think it has had an affect on spelling. I text often and don't use all of those abbreviations.

When it cost you $$$$$$$$$ I may abreviate from time to time.....

But we now have this unlimited plan.....I hate it.
I would rather talk on the phone.
And I don't like to be on the phone.
"Hello?............Just the facts, get to the point, ok... bye."
This text thing is bullocks....

I recently found out that you can use special Icelandic letters (Á, É, Í, Ú, Ý, Þ, Æ, Ö) in texting so now I try to spell the few texts I send correctly.

I think that there are lot of kids here in Iceland that have had to learn how to spell allover again. The evidence of that are on social networks like Hugi.is and facebook.

I abhor text shorthand from someone that has a perfectly good keyboard in front of them. It tells me the user is lazy. I usually will skip reading whatever it is that was written. But hey... I'm just an old butthead... and sometimes a cranky one.

Texting only affects your spelling if you don't mind people not taking you seriously.

I understand that it is, "21st Century Shorthand" and/or "21st Century Slang". My only fear is that it in time, it will usurp correct speech and writing skills outside of its intended realm. As you've seen too, I single out posters who start there sentences with, "OK" or, "So". No, I'm not the, "grammar police" and I use some of it myself but by the same token, I feel that when one wants to intelligently communicate with someone else, proper language skills goes a long way in promoting intelligent conversation.

Case in point: This is merely IMO where YMMV.

Phone texting, I hate it. An example between my son and I:

My son gets off from work. He texts, "I'm off".
I reply, "ok"
20 minutes later he texts, "Were R U?"
I reply, "At home"
He replies, "R U on UR way?"
I reply, "No."
He replies, "I need a ride home."
I reply, "Are you going to ask?"

He finally calls and is upset that he is still at work. We had a discussion that if he needs a ride home he needs to call and ask or express that he needs a ride before going to work. I hate texting. In my opinion I feel that the meaning of the sender/sendee gets lost. Also it takes a long time to have a conversation that should only take less than a minute.

On a similar note, my son is a terrible speller. He hates to write. He is an ace at math and science, but English is not a strong subject for him. I wish it was since most notable jobs require a clear, articulate form of expression to document what you are doing or wanting. I just cannot see him flipping burgers for a living, which is what he is doing now. He is still a teenager and in high school, but he graduates this year and he has plans to go to college. Since some form of English is a requirement for any degree, I fear he may get discouraged. Also all the classes I took in college required some sort of written paper, even my math classes. I also cannot see him doing manual labor like plumbing, construction or being an electrician where written skills are not a must.
