Has anyone attended classes provided by National Guitar Workshop? They're holding one just up the road from me in Austin this summer, and I'm definitely interested. The six-day class costs $995 plus materials and accommodations.

Has anyone attended one of these or know someone who has? I'm interested specifically in the Blues Core class, but any feedback at all would be helpful. Thanks in advance! 8)

I went there (to Austin) last year and I loved it. Worth every penny for the things you learn and the overall experience. I attended the blues summit, with classes taught by Matt Smith. I'm sure that all the other classes were great too, but I liked Matt Smith's group because he's a fun guy and he squeezes an incredible amount of interesting information into the day. He mostly covers blues, but he also covers things like modes, slide, chords, rhythm, funk, rock, lead, alternate tunings and theory.

NGW was where I got to meet Jimmie Vaughan last year, since he was the guest artist. The timing was perfect since it was my first time there, and they couldn't have picked someone I wanted to see more. :) This year I was prepared to disappointed because I thought nothing could equal the coolness of talking guitars with Jimmie Vaughan, but when I found out that the guest artist this year is Hubert Sumlin I freaked out (in a good way lol)! So I can't wait to see him. And if you're a blues summit student you get to go to Antone's and play. Just be careful you hook up with the right people, because if you have to practice with people who don't want to practice and don't want to play the song you want to play it can be hard. This year I'm a lot more experienced so I hope that won't be a problem.

But anyway, last year I learned a lot, had about the most fun I've ever had in my life, met some new friends and just had a great time. I'm definately going back this year, although I'm probably going to have to jump through some hoops to pay for it. It's worth it though, if they had year round classes I think I wouldn't have been able to come back to Houston. :D

Thanks for the awesome feedback, TGS! My wife has tentatively given me the green light to go. To give you an idea of what a good sport she is, our 20th wedding anniversary falls right in the middle of the class!

Since I'm not as advanced a player as you, I'm looking at taking the Blues Core course. I hope you are able to attend this year. It would be nice to meet you and maybe pick up a few pointers from you as well. Keepin' the blues alive in Texas--yee haw! 8)

Everything I ever heard or read about them has been nothing short of a guaranteed great and informative time. Add to the fact that Tex is going and you already have someone to hang with = A BLAST

Well, I took the plunge and registered today. At the ripe old age of 46, I'm going to band camp!

Is it a pretty big thing? How many people would you say were there last year?

It's big, but it's not huge. I'd say there were about 150 students total, with the biggest class being about 20. Some classes even had as little as 5 people in them. Mine had about 12 people in it, and it's like a group lesson. You still get personal attention though, and everyone can ask questions whenever.

I'd highly suggest bringing a hand held recorder with you if you have one, because they let you tape the lessons (for your own personal use of course). There's so much information packed into that week that you'll want to listen to everything over again. Bringing a notebook and taking notes is also a good idea.

Also, bring a small amp with you. I don't know what I was thinking dragging around a 30 watt tube amp the first day. Luckily I brought my Micro Cube along as backup. They provide the amps if you play on stage.

Thanks for the advice. I had already decided that my Micro Cube was the way to go. I'm pretty stoked about this. And now the waiting...

I received an e-mail from National Guitar Workshop offering a $200 discount to anyone who uses me as a reference to sign up for a summer 2010 class. If you are interested, let me know. My e-mail address is the same as my username here at gmail dot com. 8)

I'm probably going to do the jazz thing next year. It'll be good college prep.
