This summer a part time position is going to open up at the guitar store I've been going to since I was 13. I was just talking about guitars and gear and even college with my guitar tech today like normal and he brought it up and asked if I'd be interested. He said that he would teach me about setting up guitars and I'd be helping him with that. I'd also be helping customers looking to buy guitars or amps and any other accessory. I've always been a total gear head so I already know a lot about those sort of things. I'm really excited about it, since it's basically like asking a kid to work at a candy store. :D And I've always wanted to learn about working on guitars, but I lack the tools, experience and the space in my house to really get good at it. I mentioned that for Christmas I got the Stratocaster Handbook to learn more about Strats and how everything worked on them, but today my guitar tech gave me a big thick book about setting up and repairing every kind of guitar and told me to start studying. :D

So I'm going to send in my resume and hopefully I'll be able to start this summer. It should be a job that will last until I go to college, and it'll probably go a long way to help me pay for college if I can manage to walk out of the store with a paycheck instead of another Strat. And it's doing something I really love with people who I've known for a long time. So I'm all excited now, I can't wait for summer! :D

have fun in your new adventure.

btw, what do you plan to study in college? a career with a business background, or maybe a music-related course could allow you to continue your career in the business. best of luck whatever you do.

Bah, I have been going through some seriously bad times here.

I know. The ironic thing about this job is that I might be employed when my Dad isn't. He's been out of work since July and every lead he thought he had has fallen through. We're doing okay though, before that job my Dad was self employed so we're used to living this way. And actually, compared with the year my Mom had cancer this year has actually been better. I'm just happy I don't have to worry about anyone in my family possibly dying anymore. My Mom is doing fine now by the way, thank God. :)

I'd like to study Jazz in college. I'm not going off to school immediately when I graduate though. I'm getting the boring things like math finished in community college so that my last two years can be more easily devoted to music. That's another reason this job would be good, since I could still work there while attending community college.

You know, working on guitars by day and being a working musician at night sounds very appealing to me. I would like to that as a living. I know I wouldn't be rich, but I really care more about doing something I like to do more than if I were making a bunch of money at something I didn't really have my heart into.

Sounds like a great opportunity for you. I think if you're lucky you will have both a paycheck and a new Strat. Hopefully the Strat will come with a huge employee discount.

Good luck..

TGS,

Congrats on the offer. I wish I had been offered an opportunity like that when I was younger. This will also open up some doors for you to meet a lot of other musicians as well. Also I heard every once in a while (especially in Houston) you may have a celebrity or two come in looking for gear or have gear worked on. Also a good place to learn the in's and out's of a bunch of different guitars.

I can't wait to post a thread to you for advise on set-ups, differences of fret heights, or how do I put a Dimarzio BC-1 in my neck position.

I guess managing a music store was the happiest, most care free time of my life. Fender dealer, along with Gibson, Guild, Ovation, and Ibanez. It was my job to go thru the musical instrument catalogs and pick out cool stuff to put in stock.

I would jam with customers that came in during the day, and my band practiced in the back room at night.

I could stand to relive that all over again, for sure...

...At least I got to do it once.

Congragulations, just remember that when you're dealing with the public, you'll be dealing with all kinds of personalities. Some nice, some difficult. No matter what happens, just remember that the customer is always right whether or not you agree with them. Do that and you'll be okay!

And remember if some customer starts to becoma a total A-hole to you there is always notalwaysright.com to went on :D

Good for you TGS,a person much wiser than I once said"Find a job doing what you love and you'll never work a day in your life."Truer words were never spoken. My dream job would be testing out Fenders before they were sent out.
