I think everybody, at a time or another, has desired fame and fortune. It's only natural. When the fame and fortune becomes the reason you play music, that's when to quit. Music should be for other people and the love of music.

Personally, the last thing I want is fame. I couldn't stand it. I don't want to be famous in any way shape or form.
Fortune, on the other hand could be useful. At least I can buy more guitars with fortune! :D

Absolutely. Let people who've been around longer than you help you. That way you learn more and it keeps you humble.

I think that the best piece of advise anyone's ever given me about guitar is to do it because you love it. Not for any other reason, but there really aren't very many other reasons. I've only made about $140, a hamburger and a glass of lemonade from playing guitar and I've been playing four years. Groupies are a myth. Playing guitar to attract people to you is a myth. The only guys that hit on me are very drunk (not to mention very old and extremely stupid). And instead of fame I've just made some really good friends who are also musicians over the years. But I think I'm a lot happier than a lot of people who are chasing fame. I don't have the pressure of living up to unrealistic expectations of myself and I enjoy playing much more than someone who does. :)
guitargirl, that's EXACTLY how i feel about it. i want to play for the music, and to spread a message. i want tostart a band and play to change what music today has become: a load of crap. we need to bring back good, pure rock and roll. our generation should be the one to do it.

so what do you say? let's get out there and change the music industry! start a revolution!

-Jake :P

Yah i think our generation should change the crap out there 2, its about time to bring back some real music

Well, the way I've seen it, most started out as a purists. Meaning, its all about the music and self-expression, period. In time, they morph into wanting fame due to this purist stance, possessing a firm commitment to their music surely being palatable to the 'ill informed' and 'yearning' masses. Then, they morph into feeling they deserve recognition with that purist stance slightly diminishing and now, a musical self-worth increasing. Somewhere in this, they feel they should be paid for it as not only is their music worth it but they are entitled to payment for the time and effort they put into it. Next, they morph into bitterness and jealousy because of the, "thoroughly undeserving" who have indeed, acquired fame and fortune but yet, said persons still haven't with that purist stance diminishing even more and self-worth proportionately increasing. Interestingly, their latest music seems to albeit, subconsciously, conforming a bit more to the main stream. Right about here there is that now deep rooted aspect regarding also wanting to be recognized as a sex symbol. Moving on, they then reach the point where they'll do anything to 'make it' outright, wanting or even obsessed with pursuing fame and fortune so bad they can 'taste it'. Still further on, they reassess themselves, realizing they are surely far from alone in their quest/journey, ever bitterly cognizant of the fact that those 'thoroughly undeserving' types have indeed, hit it big which segues to the revelation that they probably won't as there is simply no accounting for taste. Couple this to the fact that they are now disillusioned and depressed over music at large and how the whole experience has betrayed and jaded them, they either quit, conform or go back to, "square one". Compound this with the whole other huge issue of being forced to have a, "day job" for all the obvious reasons.

Me? I have to admit, I was always shallow when it came to music. I wanted to learn guitar 50% because I liked the sound of it and the other 50% was my presumption that if I played known tunes or Classical pieces well while having an impressive look about me during what I happened to be playing, this would enhance my opportunities to pick up and score with babes, nothing further. Yes, I was fulfilled.

Did I ever want to be a star? Honestly, no. I'm a day person who prefers normal hours and a normal lifestyle where I am regularly with my family and get to regularly sleep in my own bed.

Ironically, within the first year of learning guitar, I became obsessed with the technicalities of guitars themselves and wound up going down that road where I'm still going down today. Truth be told, this, I never saw coming.

Obviously, this is merely IMO where YMMV.
