Bo Diddley - Could make a whole song from one chord.
Albert King - Plays left but keeps the strings right.
Robin Trower - His control of overdrive & effects.

Andy McKee is a great acoustic guitarist with a unique two handed tapping technique.Oh and lets not forget that Canadian guitar great Keifer Sutherland I mean he's so utterly over-the-top with his playing that Gibson saw fit to release a Keifer Sutherland tribute guitar, now isn't that a sign of a guy's true virtuosity?I heard that his Daddy Donald has the only one sold, certainly that's destined to be another Holy Grail guitar.

The guitar players from the band "presidents of the united states" who sing the song millions of peaches (any one familiar with them?) played hybrid basitars. It was like a guitar with half bass strings have guitar so they covered both bass and guitar from one instrument.

Johnny Cash's guitarist Luther Perkins from 1955 to 1968. He played a Tele with his palm muting the strings to produce the boom chicka boom style Cash is known for. Not a great guitarist, by his own admission, but gained the admiration of a lot of other players. I read the style he came up with was purly by accident. The Tele he bought used had a broken volume pot, and was stuck on wide open, so he muted the strings to compensate for that. Upon Luther's death in 1968, Bob Wootton filled the spot and carried on the Cash sound until Cash's death.

Alex Lifeson from Rush.

He has a way of utilizing interesting chord voicings in such a way that sound huge but clear and there's always that extra not hanging in there somewhere that gives it that not just your bar chord feel... that's about the best way i can verbalize it. His leads are great too.

Albert King - Upside down guitar with drop tuned heavy strings and huge bends. SRV and everyone after would sound drastically different if not for Albert King.

Albert Collins - He tuned his guitar like a steel guitar and playing with his fingers and a capo. I don't think I've ever seen anyone else do that.

Robert Randolph - He is to pedal steel what Hendrix was to regular guitar.

And of course, Jimi Hendrix - I think about 90% of guitar players today owe something to Jimi Hendrix whether they know it or not.

Stanley Jordan was the guy I was thinking of when I came up with Andy McKee after all Stanley was the one who brought this technique to the fore in the late 70s,a true innovator.

You're right Slinger. I saw Albert King live, from right up close in front of the stage, and the way he played was astonishing. It was like he was wrestling that guitar, like it was a big old alligator in a death roll! Never seen anyone play like that.

And Jimi, well, let's never underestimate what he did for the electric guitar as an instrument. What Les Paul did for recording Jimi did for electric guitar.

Oh, and how could we forget Roy Buchanan!
The other master of the Telecaster. If you haven't discovered Roy yet check this clip, he pulls sounds like a pedal steel, with a superb tone and impeccable phrasing.

I read the thread and of what I saw I agree most with:

Robert Randolph - He is just silly on the pedal steel and I hope he has opened some eyes on the potential of the instrument.

Robin Trower - The Tone Dripper. He comes up with a very surreal sound, but if you watch his hands, is "careful" and makes sure he hits all the notes live.

Chet Atkins - Check out some youtube clips. See if yu can find "Stars and Stripes Forever". The guy was a true master and I am guessing he must have practiced one heck of a lot!!!

Did Eddie Van Halen get any props? - If Frank Zappa says you re-invented the electric guitar, that should put you on the map; no?

I'll second the vote for Eddie Van Halen.

I see nobody has mentioned Peter Frampton either. Although it might be said he's famous for his use of the voice box on the Frampton Comes Alive album... what I think was his most recognizable trait was that stance he used... hunched over the guitar with knees together and legs bent. Seems he went into that stance frequently. That particular trait went back to his childhood days of playing with Humble Pie.
