Is there any musicians here who has a famous or a well known relative that is a musician and has helped you achieve your musical goals, or has helped you along as far as getting gigs or meeting the right people, connections, or deals? You always hear how some of those players with famous relatives try not to name drop or use thier connections to get ahead, and the ones that do. I'm not here to judge or condemn, just curious.

Sometimes its who you know, other times, its who you *low...Not literally in most cases, I hope, I just mean the figuratively blowing smoke up someones...meaning, "Giving a gratuitous and insincere compliment, possibly to deceive."

Most people with talent or a gift usually do not need to name drop...the ones who constantly have to in order to remind people why they should be considered significant, aren't really all that significant if they have to keep reminding people who they are.

Jakob Dylan is a good example of someone not having to remind you of who their dad is. Granted the Wallflowers haven't done anything in years, but they were freaking huge on their own merits...But then I remember the first when the Adema CD came out, all I kept hearing is that someone in the band is related to the singer of Korn...like that's supposed to somehow make the better than it is, even though it wasn't that good to begin with? No one really said anything about if the band or the CD was decent, the main selling point was, "This guy's related to that guy from Korn, so it must be cool, so buy it!"

I have a cousin who used to jam with Hendrix in London. My cousin had a punk rock band before anyone had heard the term, "punk rock". I think they were called, "Pink Fairies", (seriously!) Not my kind of fun, and it never did me any good. Oh well...

Peace, Gridlok 8)

I've said before that I have a very famous Aunt. However I have seen her but twice since I was 7 and she has had no bearing at all on my career. If anything the other guys I play with are embarrassed by the fact.

My second cousin is country legend Merle Haggard.
I never met him. I'm more of a Buck Owens fan, anyway. :P

I have a cousin who is a producer at MTV... maybe if I knew how to play he could hook me up?

I'd rather be rich than famous. Looks like I'm screwed all the way around. 8)

Well this is one business where a relative can only get you so far,-maybe an audition Also being the offspring of a legend is more a curse than a blessing as they are always compared to there parent. Anyone who can say they had a cousin who jammed with Hendrix has a great story in my book, as I am usually juiced up by hearing those who got to see him live.

No relatives, but a good friend of mine that ive known since high school is pretty big in Nashville, tours alot and well known - Ive learned tons from him over the years - get to see some cool concerts, go back stage, meet some celebs, get to see the behind the scene stuff the average dude doesnt see, and play some damn cool guitars - its cool - very proud of him!

He actually played one of my old strats out on tour this year and it was on various TV shows when they played! Thats my claim to fame!! lol

I've been making a lot of good connections lately. People who help me out and teach me more about playing guitar, playing in a band and music in general. Sometimes they help me find places to play or put in a good word with someone for me.

Some of them know a few of the bigger names in Austin so we'll just have to see how that works out. :) I'm not going to push or anything, I don't even have a band yet and I don't want to use my friends like that. I hate it when people just try to be friends with you because they want something from you or they're trying to get to someone else.

I will say this, my Aunt has something to do with Hendrix's U.K. exposure.

I have a distant cousin who is in charge of the River Boat Rides in San Antonio. Does that help?

I've noticed that my Rockabilly Hall of Fame Membership hasn't helped very much at all.
