I've recently "discovered" Rory Gallagher on Youtube and I think he was awesome...it's a shame he isn't with us. I was wondering if anyone had seen the DVDs or CDs of his...how they were...and where I should start to further explore his music. Thanks! 8)

Live in Europe is also amazing. And read "riding shotgun" by his bassist for 25+ years, Gerry McAvoy.

A true guitar legend.

I saw Rory live in the mid 70s,what a show it was,I was in the 3rd or 4th row.I don't have any of his DVDs yet but that will soon change as I only found out recently that they were available.I find that CD Universe has a great selection of CDs and DVDs even really obscure stuff-not that Rory is obscure but to give you an idea of their selection.

I've been a big Rory Gallagher fan for almost 40 ( ) years now.
I've seen him perform at least 10 times and in my opinion he is the most versatile of the TRULY great guitarists. He is an awesome electric/acoustic/slide guitar player, he wrote, sang and produced the bulk of his output of almost 30 years. He also played a great harmonica and mandolin and very good sax & sitar. If you asked me what to get first, it would have to be his second solo album "Deuce". At the age of only 23, he wrote all the songs and produced it too. There is great guitar playing throughout the album- hard rock, country blues, acoustic folky stuff ala Bob Dylan, Chicago-style electric blues which would have been perfect for Muddy Waters and the crowning jewel is " Crest of a Wave". There's no doubt about it - it's one of the top slide guitar soloes ever. You have to hear it for yourself. At times it sounds like a soprano singing, then gets nasty and narly - whats cool is you can tell his amp is jacked up as far as it will go. When he plays a line or riff, you can hear the amp begin to feedback at the end . It's a great, great song. And there's a bunch of them on this album.

You should have no problem as in the last few years there has been a big release of both Dvds and Cds on Rory.

I think he is my favorite as well. Every song I listen to increases my positive view of him. Moonchild, Tattoo'd Lady, A Million Miles Away, For the Last Time, I Take What I Want and so many more. I kind of even want the Rory Strat...even though I am generally not into relics but his is different. I wish I could've seen him live...must have been sweet! 8)

I like all of his stuff, but a couple I definitely recommend are:

Stage Struck - my favorite of his live albums and
BBC Sessions.
