There are all kinds of stories about how "The Band" got started...what's yours? Did you start in the garage or in your backyard, basement or in an old abandoned warehouse somewhere?...Tell us YOUR story.................

I'm yet to start a band but 3 of my friends want to start one based on the acronym of our names spelling a dirty word

You left out basement. Thats where many of my bands got started cause thats where the gear was kept. Usually just started jamming with friends...had the best experiences with just having fun with friends, as any time we auditioned or took someone in who wasn't really a part of our circle of friends, it ended up being too much hassles, drama, BS, etc....which is part of the reason why these days I just choose to play with people I already know from somewhere other than music...but this has its minuses too, casue then sometimes band stuff bleeds into the friendship or something...but then again, its not like I am constantly in bands trying to get somewhere...its just all about fun mainly...

We used to play in the carpark under the building after work. The sounds was awful, bouncing off concrete walls, floors and the ceiling, but the idea of playing got us through the work day.

Responded to a advert on the internet. Passed the audition, sacked some quite horrible bass players that the singer bought in. He bought a good bassist in so I kept the bassist and sacked the singer. Got a sexy girly singer now, booked up on biker functions till june. I may be quitting soon.

Lesson 1: Your never 100% happy.
Lesson 2: Shut up and put up with it. You dont know what you got till its gone.

I put my current band (The Screamin' Armadillos) together in 2002.

I had played with my drummer in another band for about a year, but due to some arrogance & professional jealousy on the part of the other guitarist/vocalist in that band, I left...and the drummer eventually followed me.

I decided to do everything (rehearsals, band structure, etc) the exact opposite of the previous band...that meant choosing/performing songs that the band as a whole wanted to play (not just one individual), rehearsing with a purpose (not rehearsing for a full year before playing a gig), keeping it loose and fun (give everybody a solo or let the bassist play guitar if he wants to, at one time or another), play the song the way we felt it (not necessarily the way it was recorded), money is split evenly within the band and things such as that.

We've had a few members come and go (mostly due to health or family issues--only one left under bad terms, but his behavior/problem with alcohol was intolerable), but we're still together, recording and getting ready to perform regularly with our new bassist. Keep it simple and fun, and there's nary a problem to be had!

The band I just quit was me and my two best friends from highschool. It was great untill they stopped playing what they wanted to and started playing whatever the person with the fattest wallet wanted.

i started with my first band at the music school i was during the time with another studients there. the good was we could practise in the drum room after lessons in the evening, also we could use the guitar amps, pa mixer and the pa. so this was the best practise room i used.

my second band was metal band. we practised in the basement of a meat wholesaler. this building was a slaugtherhouse one time before. this room was 12 m long, 3,5 m width, 5 m hight ceiling. it was not simple to get a good sound there. but who cares. we had make big "krach" during above the workers working.

for now i'm not in a band at the moment.

cheers :D

Played in garage bands, (basements also), 7th. grade thru high school. Took a 25 year break, kids, work, etc.,. Played at a blues jam in 2006, and was asked to form a blues band (the Bluez Doctorz), and also started another classic hits band (Slurred Vision) with keyboard player a couple months back. Both bands and members basically play to learn and have fun. :)

The band I'm in now is basically my super-group if you will. Seany (binterz on the forum) and I have played in bands together on and off since we were at school, around 16. Together we've played everywhere from The Empire here in Belfast to the late, great CBGB's in NYC.

Mark our drummer and I met years ago when I auditioned and got the rhythm guitarist spot in the band he was in. We played for a few years and then everyone went their separate ways so we gave Seany a call and found a new bass player.

Hey presto Cross Eyed Mary was born, at the mo we are recording obsessively and the new website is being worked on and will be up soon! Keep a lookout! [sponsored by shamelessplug.com]

It just happens....someone calls and says "so and so needs a singer that can play lead guitar and some keyboards" and it's like magic.

Network...save all your contacts info...it's worth it! I think that I have a list of musicians that nears 150 people on varied instruments. Some of them are right here on this forum too.
