Although I already mentioned Dick Dale, some newer school surf stuff, or surf influenced stuff, to check out is:
Los Straitjackets

Man Or Astro Man?

Hey Buddy Boy,

I'm kinda late to the party. I'm surprised nobody has steered you here...

Pay attention and take notes - it's my favorite surf guitar site. 8)

Check out this tune by Honest bob and the factory to dealer incentives. Great surf tone and easy to learn! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jtpt89siOsY

Two of the best teaching videos I've seen, made by Ferenc Dobronyi of Pollo del Mar and Frankie & The Poolboys. Both bands, you should check out.

Surfguitar 101. Get yourself there, and read everything before you sign up. Most of the questions you have shall be answered there. look for the answers before you ask the questions.

http://gloria.com.hr/special/bambi_molesters/

The new album by the Bambi Molesters....a Croatian surf band. Fantastic album.

Gear: Single coils. Big Strat vs. Jag/Jazz debate, with the Mosrite crowd being a vocal minority. Much love for the Yamaha SGVs as well. Clean Fender tube amp, outboard reverb. NO.........a pedal won't cut it. Don't even ask. You need a tank. Some fuzz, some trem. A few bands play around with other effects, but not a whole lot.

Available on Amazon, as well as (cheaper) on eBay. Has a couple of the standards, along with some Beach Boys and Jan & Dean.

Bands:
Slacktone
The Madeira
The Space Cossacks
Atomic Mosquitos
Man or Astroman?
The Tomorrowmen
The Verbtones
The Ghastly Ones
Daikaiju
The Detonators
The Eliminators
The Penetrators
Agent Orange (surf punk)
Insect Surfers
Glasgow Tiki Shakers
The Mermen
The Razorblades
Secret Samurai

A lot of them have vids on youtube. Check them out. Most of them are still touring/recording.

Podcasts, available on iTunes:
Coconut Wired
Surfguitar 101

and I can't stress it enough....if you have an interest in this music, get over to SG101. A lot of the bands listed have one or more members on the board, and they're really great people. I've gotten more help and stupid questions answered by these guys.

-but-

read through the forums before jumping in. Most of the beginner type questions have been answered, and they're not shy about telling you it's been covered before. Great people, though. My favorite website.

Tools to play surf:
Nice strat with a good handle on using the tremolo bar.
Clean LOUD amp, and a decent reverb unit.

Fender 63 reverb ri (very expensive, many SS pedals out there that work nice too)

Enjoy the new found sound! Among my favorites.
