Dick Dale! Nothing simple about his playing though...

There is a little tribute to Kurt Cobain in this sketch:

That is Kurt Cobain at 7 years old in the photo on the bar.

that was quite odd

Lots of reverb (for that "wet" sound) and hit the strings hard. Some nice and easy stuff to learn would be Apache by the Shadows and of course Pipeline.

Drench it in reverb, and then as an option some slapback delay. One repeat right on the heels of the attack

Dick Dale and the Ventures are a given. then there are a ton of options. a lot of people seem to love the Beach Boys (I am not one of them,) then there is Jan and Dean.

But some essential tracks are :
Wipeout by the Surfaris
Pipeline by the Chantays
Miserlou by Dick Dale

Any beach boys tune will give you what they were about.

jan and Dean Surf City and Deadman's Curve.

more into the modern era look for groups like The Halibuts, the Penetrators, Man or Astroman, Laika and the Cosmonauts, Shadowy Men From a shadowy Planet. For surf punk see if you can find The Forbidden Dimension, Their album 'The Sin Gallery' is a great starting point.

There's many other acts but these should help get your feet wet.

The tone is simple enough. Reverb to 10 and a Strat. The bridge pickup works well most of the time. A lot of surf is easy once you get the hang of it, but as someone already mentioned there's nothing simple about Dick Dale. It'll make your fingers have nightmares.

Check out Walk Don't Run (the song and the album) by the Ventures and Peter Gunn by Dick Dale.

The best example of a modern band who does
"Surf Music" style is Los Straitjackets.

Pete Curry was the bassist of the Halibuts (who I mentioned earleir,) before he joined Los Straitjackets!

also check out Tiesco Del Ray playing a Guit-organ here:

The Penetrators:

The Forbidden Dimension:

If you can get ahold of a copy on ebay or somewhere try find the compilation called Secret Agent S.O.U.N.D.S. It's like a gateway album for surf rock.

Nice subject you brought up because I feel surf music is all but forgotten, I was watching Pulp Fiction the other night for the 50th time and the soundtrack is just slamming. Well most of the forum has pointed you in the direction to go. I would just say make sure you work on your right hand tremolo picking as those picks will be melting fast especially going into Dick Dale waters.

Ah, Grasshopper, you come to find true guitar-holiness in learning surf guitar. Welcome, Seeker.

If you can find it, "The Surf Box" is an outstanding 4-disc history of surf music and some surfing songs (with lyrics) from '60 to the late 90s.

Go to Starbuck's and get their own label CD of surf guitar, not bad at all for a collection, and "Unto The Resplendant" on the disc is absolutely amazing modern outer-space-surf.

"Surf Monsters and Legends" is a fine collection which includes some cacaophonous modern slam-surf.

Mesuggah Beach Party does Jewish folks songs and some others to surf beat and style (Miserlou is middle-eastern) and are a true gas to listen to.

Of course, the Ventures' "Surfing" album, it's an immortal.

If you can find it, "The Endless Summer" 1965 Sandals soundtrack album is magnificent. The reunion album of the same title is not awful, considering the band is near 40 years older.

Cowabunga, Hodads and Honeys.
