My favourite Knopf tones too. The tones on the first three tracks are some of the sweetest I've ever heard.
While we're on the subject, can somebody clarify "direct into the desk"? I've always presumed the guitar cable goes into some sort of pre-amp built into the old analog desks, and this is then coloured with eq (and in this case compression) from the desk's onboard effects? Is it that simple? I know Gilmour's legendary solo on "Another Brick in the Wall" was done this way (albeit on a Les Paul, not a strat), so that's my two favourite Fender players who've done it. Incidentally, the best tone I ever got out of my old Line 6 gear was ignoring the amp models and using their model of a Neve pre-amp with a compressor, very sweet!
