Jimmy Page, the greatest thief of American black music who ever walked the earth

Hi campbellgrafx: have I misunderstood - I thought that was called doing a cover, had been going on for as long as music has existed and is regarded as a normal, fine and complimentary thing? I believe the artists named enjoy the rather enlarged royalties they get out of the process.

How much of his own material did Elvis write, by the way? Struggling to remember - though I've heard Carl Perkins say he was happy how things worked out in that regard...

Just kidding along in a friendly fashion, rest assured...

BTW: I agree with all those who are mentioning Since I've Been Loving You. But am I the only one who prefers the Page & Plant version on the No Quarter album? Maybe I am...

:D - C

Again, only having fun with the Homer quote (which I think of everytime
someone mentions Page). That said, it's called plagerism when you put
your name to a song that was written by another. A "cover" of a song
is when you play another's song and give them song writing credits.
Mr. Page has been found guilty of plagerism on more than one occasion
and has payed the price. Mind you, this is not my opinion, rather a matter
of fact.

- In 1972, Arc Music, the publishing arm of Chess Records, brought a lawsuit against Led Zeppelin
for copyright infringement over "Bring It On Home" and "The Lemon Song";
the case was settled out of court for an undisclosed sum.

In 1985, Dixon filed a copyright infringement suit against Led Zeppelin over
"Whole Lotta Love" and an out-of-court settlement was reached.
Later pressings of Led Zeppelin II credit Dixon.

The band also paid a settlement to the publisher of Ritchie Valens' song
"Ooh! My Head" over the song "Boogie with Stu"
-

As a song writer myself, I would be thankful for a well established
artist to cover one of my songs. Should they do so and give themselves writing credits...
well, that's another thing.

Again, for the record, I enjoy The Mighty Zep, have all their
recordings (expect In Through The Out Door and various
greatest hits compelations). I grew up listening to them and,
like with the Rolling Stones, have to credit them for my discovery
of the original blues artist that inspired them. All I did was quote
a cartoon character and state a few facts that are of record.
But then, as the great Homer Simpson says,
"Facts are meaningless. They can be used to prove anything."

As for my favorite Page/Zep tunes...
Black Dog for it's simple yet catchy riff and Custard Pie, as well as Trampled Under Foot
(though the latter is more of a showcase for JPJ's keyboard work).

Hi again campbellgrafx: you are absolutely right, plagiarism is a different thing entirely. I'd heard of the Chess Records cases you mention but not the others. So I stand corrected and informed.

:D

(Mind you, if I was a judge who was told he was presiding over a plagiarism case regarding a blues number I think I'd choose to stay home with a head cold that day. Too difficult...!! "Judge, your honor, the defendant has clearly used exactly the same I, IV, V construction as my client's song...")

Anyhow. I like this Homer pic. I'm off to do likewise!

LedZep, and in particular Grant, were all about the business and control of it. Grant was renowned for physically beating un-licensed t-shirt and nicknack vendors at LZ concerts... Ask any mob boss or corporate lawyer.

Oo - on that, an amusing story I saw on some TV documentary or other about Peter Grant.

Apparently, early '70s Zeppelin were playing a show on the West Coast - I think San Francisco, but maybe somewhere else. The mob was behind the promotion and after the show there was a balance of $2000 to collect for the band. Peter Grant found himself in a little portacabin office facing the middle ranking gangster in charge and asked for the money. He was told to f___ off.

"No seriously, give me the money."

"Seriously, f___ off."

It carried on, getting more heated. Till abruptly the mafia guy pulled a gun and pointed it in Grant's face. According to the third party telling the story Grant didn't bat an eyelid. He just said:

"What, you're going to shoot me - for $2000? How cheap! Hand over the money."

Which left the hood having to now shoot him or pay up. He paid up.

That's why I'm not in rock & roll management. But whatever business I was in, I'd like Pete Grant as my manager! Please!!!

Cheers - C

that wasn't a mob guy, middle, top or bottom, I'm from you know where and believe me when I say Peter would have been fish food if the mob was involved

 Only telling the story the way it was told by the guy who said he was there.

Now, how many times he'd told that story over the intervening 35 years, and what little embellishments he might have made - who knows?

But it's a good story! :D

BTW: I'm off to Cicily in a couple of weeks. I'll pay a visit to Corleone and report back. Hey - a photo of me in my Fender Lounge Tee in Godfather country - would that be a winner? 8)

Cheers - C

If you see Piazza Olivella (off the tourist line unfortunately), say hello to my wife's relatives and have some divine sicilian pizza....just don't go in the back room.

Ceri, that would be super cool and hopefully a winner as well! Yes it is a good story, my only thought was if some one should have a brush with one of the real guys, run, walk fast, fly, any way they can to get away from that situation. 8)

I was never a big Zepplin fan but after watching "It Might Get Loud" I had a new found respect for Jimmy Page. As for my favourite song, I'd have to say When the Levee Breaks.

I don't think it was that "authorized". After it came out, Plant was quoted as saying "between all the lies there are some shreds of truth...". Personally, I'd pass on it. I read it, and was unimpressed. Just my opinion ...

To be honest, I haven't heard much Page beyond Led Zeppelin. I haven't been much of a fan of Zeppelin, mainly because of the singer and his lyrics. the guy had an okay voice, maybe even great, but what he was singing...I would definately buy a Jimmy Page solo album. He was the best thing about that band, no doubt.

Fave songs of his:
I like the guitar parts, not neccessarily the rest of the song, on
Heartbreaker, Stairway to Heaven, Rock and Roll, Living Loving Made, Immigrant Song, and Black Dog. Of those I've heard.
Both his riffs and solos...awesome! He was really an iconic guitar player.
