The Deluxe Reverb is not the only vintage Fender amp worth owning. In fact it's not even the best vintage Fender amp, IMO. The DR is usually the most expensive due to it's popularity. You should be able to find a great old amp for $1500 if you stay away from eBay. eBay is it's own little world and the prices people will pay there bear little or no resemblance to real world values.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

The new 65 deluxe and princeton reissues sound great for under $1000. A lot of mom & pop shops carry vintage amps. I got a 74 twin reverb and 78 pro reverb, both under $800. Shop around, I'm sure you will find a good deal. good luck! :)

If you are open to brands other than Fender, I'd suggest the Carvin Belair (50 watt Tweed 2X12). Sweet clean tone and superb natural overdrive when you want it combined with rock solid reliability. I had one for years and it never did me wrong. I only sold it because I bought a Carvin V3 and my wife will only tolerate one BIG amp in the house at a time.

Here's a link to the amp specs and sound clips.

Check out the 2nd hand or antique shops. My friend just found a 63 bandmaster head for "5 Bucks" Ya no $@!& The power cord was cut at the hold down clamp just inside of the head. He turned around and sold it for 500 bucks. I'm P.O.'d that he didn't ask me first.
