Pffffttt, Boss isn't boutique so they don't even deserve to be considered.

The whole boutique market is crap. I cant think of one £100+ a pedal maker out there whos product deserves the price they charge. Particularly when you can build something superior yourself for just shy of £60. Boss, digitech and all them others are very generic sounding for a reason, it sells. They pick a popular sound then emulate it. The outcome is a load of manufacturers making the same thing. Boutique builders are going the same way. Everything the same as everything else. The whole pedal market is boring and stagnant. Electro Harmonix be praised atleast their synths are pushing the boundaries a bit. I always thought their fuzz's were pretty bad, unmusical, raspy sounding affairs.

That is such a beast of a pedal. Its like the size of an Atari 2600.

I have the Muffn and I like it a lot - but it's not really a fuzz. It's a tube pre-amp and tone stack, capable of early drive to pretty full on distortion... and it's got plenty of bite, high end and presence available - but it's not a fuzz.
It's replaced my Fulltone OCD and Keeley Blues Driver Phat Mod, both are great pedals with a very amp-like overdrive which is what I wanted. But the Muffn is a lot more amp-like, because it's half an amp!

Suits me right down to the ground, and turns my Vibroverb into a twin channel monster with the clean Fender blackface tone, and a vintage British ball-tearing channel too. A lot of players wouldn't like it tho, it doesn't compress much at all, very dynamic, can be hairy and ragged sounding like a Vox cranked, or even a tweed overdrive kinda sound. Definitely not a polite pedal!

This isn't marketing B.S. It is from a very small, award winning handmade electronics shop that is not boring, stagnant, or generic sounding crap.

From their website...

Welcome to Barber Electronics.

Ever since I can remember I have been building, modifying and restoring musical instruments and amplifiers. In my quest to achieve more expressive tones I have created a line of effects and amplifiers for guitar and bass players. Barber Electronics is my way of bringing the results of my tireless quest for tone to fruition. Barber effect pedals use high quality components and construction methods previously unheard of in this industry. We have pioneered the use of specific matching techniques and hand selection of components for the characters they lend to your ultimate tones.

Our units are primarily unique designs not direct copies of older circuits. All Barber units tone hallmarks include greater clarity, note definition, and a wider range of tones, textures, flexibility and functions, than other pedals available on the market today. We are committed to musician friendly pricing and do not engage in extreme Boutique pricing, We also do not use the title "Boutique" to sell pedals, our products are simply hand made. Our client list over the years has included well known names like Joe Satriani, Lee Roy Parnell, Nils Lofgren of the E Street Band, Jay Graydon, David Grissom, Richard Thompson, Eric Johnson, Christopher Cross, Dave Knudson. Please take some time to browse our web site and learn about our products.

Thank you!

David Barber

His playing isn't the best, but the distortion sounds great.
