I have been playing electric guitar for almost 2 years and I just got a good quality acoustic made by Seagull. I am using this guitar to play delta style blues. There are some effects that I do, like fingering and playing a chord, then sliding up or down a couple of frets without releasing the chord that are giving be a bit of trouble.

When I do this on the wound strings, there's a loud raspy noise. I do not get this effect on an electric.

I'm not sure what to do about this. Can you help?

The strings that came with the guitar seem to be of good quality. The guitar sounds good.

I get a similar sound when I'm changing chords often, but I attribute that to "operator error" in the sense that I should be lifting my fingers off the fretboard differently than I do when I am playing the electric.

Thank you in advance for your time and assistance.

Ah... finger squeaks. Yup. You get them on the electric but you just don't hear them. The only way to avoid them is to lift your finger off the string when moving it.

I truly hate finger squeal. Try a set of Flatwound strings.

Thank you! At least I know what to call it now. I'll look into the flat wounds. It would also help a lot if I could find a set of strings with a G string that is not wound.

I'm coming to understand the acoustic as a different animal than the electric.

By the way, the guitar is their Coastline Grand model, which is a parlor sized guitar. I tried it at a music store back in December and it has been haunting me ever since. I guess the term is "GAS". The reason I like it is that it's not as loud as full size acoustics, while it has a full size finger board. It is also much more comfortable for me to hold than a full size acoustic. It's a very cool guitar.

Flatwounds will do it but when playing acoustic there is supposed to be a little squeek from the strings because it's part of the whole sound of an acoustic guitar. You could try some coated strings (i recommend Ernie Ball coated phosphor bronze they sound great) and cut the squeeks back alot. Then the playing style will help also.

The newer the strings are the louder they will squeak Once they are broken in and played on for a while it will diminish..

I love the squeaks... just like I love to hear a singer breathe occasionally. If they made acoustic-guitar-in-a-box effects like they do for tape echo simulations, there would be a "squeak" knob like a delay modulation control. Post-rock types would crank it mercilessly and gaze shoeward.

the squeaks are supposed to be there. i'm quite the opposite side of the spectrum from you... been playing acoustic since 1976 and just started electric about a year and a half ago.
on the majority of acoustic guitar recordings, you'll hear the squeaks, the slides, the thumps, and all the rest of the nuances associated with the acoustic guitar.
on an electric the pick-ups grab the sound from the vibrating string(s) and that's about it. on the acoustic, the "box" is the pick up and everything from the headstock to the tail pin rings through it.
learn to love it... and welcome to the club!

Try Fast Fret or coated strings... and as others have said, releasing pressure when sliding.

But don't obsess about it... a small amount of squeal adds character. ;)

I love the string talk, I spent years developing it into my electric technique and since I won the Malibu I'm in heaven. I'm completely unused to acoustic guitars. Everything on it is shaking around when you play, its a really organic experience. I incorporated it into my bands set on saturday night. The drums, bass and vocals were all causing the top to resonate.

With all that going on, string talk is hardly noticable.
