Is there an easy way I can set the cheap Line 6 Spider I have at the house to sound like gilmour's effects? I don't really have much to work with.

Dave has had a number of different sounds over the years and he uses a LOT of various gear in his rig but usually you can get fairly close to a generic Gilmour tone using the neck pickup on your Strat, one of the British amp models, you'll have to experiment because I don't believe they supply a Hiwatt model, a reasonable amount of gain in the drive stage, lots of compression, lots of reverb, a little delay and a little chorus. For some songs you'll want to either clean up the gain or crank in some more depending on which song you're doing. For example on Money he used a relatively low gain setting in comparison to his other work but on Sorrow he dialed in such monstrous gain that you'd likely have a difficult time controlling it.

Have David Gilmour on your birth certificate.

Or you could just be you and give us something else to love.

You might want to have a look at this: http://www.gilmourish.com/ as it gives a fairly good insight as to what gear and effects he used at various times. If you then know what he actually usd you may be able to work out how to use what you have to get close to it.

Cheers.

I think Eric Clapton and David Gilmour were trading secrets in the late 80's. You can tell Gilmour is using Hotter Pickups (EMG as opposed to EC's Lace Sensors), but the rest is so similar they could Trade Guitars and no one would know.

The one thing you won't find on your Line6 Spider is Slow Vibrato. Gilmore has a very slow and deliberate Vibrato from his Left Hand. If you listen to what EC is doing with this similar tone, you'll hear a much faster and sharper Vibrato.

Gain, Reverb, and Chorus will get you close, but that Slow Vibrato is what will really sell it.

I love Fender forums. I am ashamed that I've never heard Pink Floyd's Sorrow. I have taken such a sharp turn from my hardcore thrash metal roots ever since buying my Strat and joining here. I have really come enjoy David Gilmour and Eric Clapton...in fact that is about all I have been consistently listening to since New Years Eve...

Sorrow is from Floyd's last studio album, Division Bell. Starting to look like it will be the last one ever. Good disc. Richard Wright did a fair bit of the writing on that one. More so than he's usually known for. R.I.P. Richard.

Sorrow is actually from Momentary Lapse of Reason 1987. What a Gigantic Tone. If you are looking for some awesome Gilmour soloing, check out Animals, as well as The Final Cut. The Fletcher Memorial Home has a really powerful solo.

Well, the reason that Sorrow has such a gigantic tone is that it was actually recorded by him playing his Steinberger into a Marshall stack (he was futzing about with Marshalls for a while around that time, starting from using one on The Wall and going up until the beginning of the Momentary Lapse tour) and then it was re-recorded by playing the original recording on the sound system at Shea Stadium (the baseball stadium that the New York Mets played in, if you weren't aware) and that was mic'd.

As far as Gilmour's general tone... He doesn't use his amps for distortion. If you use an EL34-based amp set loud enough that it's on the verge of feedback and then use different distortion pedals, you'll get the basics. He's used everything from a Big Muff Pi to a Rat to even a Boss Metal Zone.

Honestly, though, a lot of the tone is technique. Gilmour still sounds like himself when playing a Gretsch Duojet into a Fender Champ. You could probably hand him Steve Vai's rig and he'd still sound like himself.

If you study his vibrato, the way he bends, and just his feel for the note, you'll get it.

I don't know what type of strings D.G. uses, but I have seen some of the best stretch strings. He's at the top of the list. How they last a set is incredible. Examples, One Of These, and Comfortably Numb.

He uses GHS Boomers in 10 gauge, which I've never had much luck with.
