Shelter Me by Tab Benoit would fit the bill in my opinion - a great song with a great blues hook, should allow you to step out with a solid solo.

If you're already thinking Beatles, don't forget Twist and Shout for the Ferris Bueller fans! Some stuff I enjoy hearing covered:
- CCR;
- Dire Straits;
- Rolling Stones;
- Bryan Adams has plenty of popular get up and dance stuff;
- AC/DC;
- George Thorogood.

TGS,

No suggestions except Texas Flood. Good luck. Let us know how it goes. Keep us apprised of the play list.

Cool, I'm getting some more good ideas.

I did Texas Flood last year, although my bassist and drummer had probably never heard it before and started playing this weird slow rock beat behind it and I had to end it before the third verse because it was just so horrible. :lol: Maybe I can redeem myself with it this year.

I love Blind Faith, so working that in could be a possibility. I've always wanted to do Dear Mr. Fantasy, although that may be a little bit hard to learn in time. Especially if the rest of the band isn't familiar with it.

Do y'all think it would be a good idea to do Going Down by Freddie King/Jeff Beck/SRV? Even if someone has never heard it before it's really impossible not to like and it would work very well as a platform to trade some solos with the other guitarist. Who knows, I might even sing it. My main problem seems to be remembering lyrics, and the lyrics to Going Down are about as easy as they get. :) Plus you're playing the same thing you're singing like on Voodoo Child (Slight Return) so it makes the task of playing/singing a lot easier. So if my #1 choice singer craps out on me I'm not totally without options.

Firstly good playing (no luck needed -- you'll blow 'em away)! Along lines of Blind Faith, I always liked "Can't Find My Way Home" ... nice easy song many will recognize and good for when you want to slow it down.

I always used to close with something by the Rolling Stones (Not Fade Away, Jumpin Jack Flash or similar). They're great because you can move people, not complicated (after a long set) and you can extend and jam if the audience is still into it.

Well, bad news. It may not happen at all. I talked to my youth minister (who hooked me up last year) and he said there are no plans for a stage or bands this year. Last year he was actively involved in planning, and he told me that this year they're almost entirely keeping him out of the loop. I guess they didn't want any more teen fronted train wreck bands, although this year I was pumped because I know how much better I've gotten. :(

I also haven't heard back from the person I wanted to sing. I'll have to call him this Sunday, since tomorrow (Saturday) I'll be in Austin (YES!). But the rest of the band is ready to go.

So here's what I'm going to do. I'm not going to just give up on this gig. I'm going to either call or write a formal letter (AKA email) to the bazaar committee inquiring about any opportunities for my band to play. Anywhere, anytime, I don't care if it's on the back of a big flat bed like last year or on the ground in some far flung corner, I want to play! :D

Why can it never be so easy as it would seem? Last year the stage was set, but getting the band together at the last minute was insane. This year the band is set, but I'm going to have to fight for the gig. :?

If it does happen, it will take place on the last weekend in April. I'll let y'all know how everything works out.

I really wish I could, but it looks like I'm heading right back Sunday morning. I'm just glad I get to go today, because for a while it there it didn't look like it was going to happen.

My first choice for a singer said yes! :D That means this should definately lean more in a southern rock/blues direction since that's what his strength is vocally. So the band is set, drummer, bassist, another guitarist, singer, me. Now all I need to do is line up the gig.

Should I try calling someone on the phone, arranging a face to face meeting, or snail mailing or emailing a plug for the band? They may view music as an annoyance, so I have to be extremely tactful when I talk to them.

I'd go in person and let your enthusiasm sell you though unless you know the person well, probably call first and ask if you can come in. I played long before bands had CDs to send out, so I and the drummer became our "sales department." We'd show up nicely dressed (this was the late 60s and to the mid 70s) and bring a sample set list along with some references.

We found that it's a lot harder for someone to say "no" when you're sitting across from them and happy to answer all their questions and objections. It's also a good way, during the conversation, to find out what limits, rules and policies they may have. You can get a feel for "how loud," how far can your songs go (risque, etc.) and what past audiences in this place have liked or not.

That sounds like a good idea, thanks. :) I'll talk with the youth minister after spring break, and hopefully he can let me know who to contact and perhaps call in ahead and put in a good word for me.

Tex this is the otherside of the business that say a famous band hires managers, lawyers and booking agents to handle. Right now you have to take the reigns and be all three. Just dont take a no as the final answer as persistence goes a long way. You have been given good advice by other forumites . You have to look at your band as a product and sometimes you have to keep pushing and try all methods and keep going over peoples heads and you may get 3 no's before a yes that comes from the person that matters. I just love the drive you have and how much you just love to play, so you go get em girl.
