Just returned from the store after getting an eyeful of the magazines at the cash register. Now both parent and child can enjoy quenching their thirst for mindless gossip at the same horse trough. Maybe I shouldn't insult the horses. Pehaps latrine suits it better. Can't imagine being a parent with an impressionable and hopeful young guitar player in their 'teens and having John Mayer as an influence in my home.
Sorry Chanman, he just doesn't cut it!! :?

So JM is the cover boy on those supermarket tabloids? I don't suppose the stories have to do with his upcoming appearance at Crossroads?

Here's a diversion (stop thinking about it!):

Let me see :? Was not Greenwich Village my stomping ground. Was I alive during those years or has all that weed stunted my growth. How is it that I don't see a parallel here. I don't recall any genitalia monolgues with Hendrix.

I am always amazed by the thirst of many for the inconsequential drivel of a " rock stars" or "movie stars" life. They are like lemmings following each other over the cliff.

As I get older I realize what are society supports on a commercial basis. I am embarrassed by mankind in general at that level.

That is all I have to say about that....

Doc,

Show me one guitarist/musician that these kids will know today that is a good influence? Not defending any one, especially JM for those rather poor choice of words, but let ye with no sin cast the first stone.

At some point you have to take in the good and filter out the bad to make your idols work for you. Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendricks, John Lennon, Eric Clapton, David Gilmour...these were some of the influences of the 60's/70's that most older guitarists idolize, and all of them broke some law(s) in their earlier years. Some even stated controversial statements. Some even died because of their indiscretions.

I would hope that with proper up-bringing, our children will be able to do what we had to do as teenagers, accept someone for their talent and filter out their other crap.

I am sick of this whole JM crap. Let it die. Don't buy his music. I don't...never have and never will. Of course this is just my opinion...

Might be the first true rock & roll thing John Mayer's ever done :P

Seriously though, I'm not a fan of his because his music is a yawn to me,
but not sure any musician or entertainer should be considered role models.
None of my favorite musicians were great role models:
Elvis
Chuck Berry
The Stones
Jimi Hendrix
Eric Clapton
James Brown
Hank Williams
George Jones
Miles Davis
...ah heck, we'll run outta room if I go on.

Something's different about this. Mayer appears to be pursuing that kind of notoriety. Can't swear for it but perhaps the only one of that lot whose been in the rag mags is Jaggar without asking. :?

I agree with you fully Doc,it seems that Mayer is bound and determined to create a controversial bad boy image knowing full well the media will eat it up and consequently keep his name front and center. It's sadly true that there's no such thing as bad publicity.
