+1 on Sonny Landreth

One of the best slide guitar solos (IMHO) is the Rolling Stones' live version of "Love In Vain" off of the "Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out" album...Mick Taylor at his finest!

I've watched that a bunch of times Mike... can't help but put a smile :) on your face. I always get a twinge of sadness though watching Danny Gatton, Roy Buchanan, Rory Gallagher and some others :(

I know someone who can do the beer bottle thing. I'll have to ask him if he's ever tried to play through a towel.

For my money.... Sonny Landreth is head and shoulders above ANYONE out there on slide guitar - you have to check him out. He will blow your mind  !!! Some of the usual suspects to check out - Duane Allman, Johnny Winter, Jeff Beck, Al Wilson ( Canned Heat ) and of course Rory Gallagher. If you have never heard Rory's second solo album called appropriately " Deuce" and you are REALLY interested in hearing some awesome slide playing, listen to the #10 track called Crest of a Wave. In my opinion, this is one of the greatest,if not the greatest, slide guitar solo ever - and I've heard just about all the great ones. Listen ONE time to the album - not any live version on you tube - they are nowhere near as good as on "Deuce" ....one time !!!!!!! :!:
+1 on Landreth.........amazing........... 8) Mike

this song was done by duane allman and eric clapton... unreleased until the duane allman anthology album came out. these guys do a pretty decent job at it.

personally i find the weight of the slide will affect the way you're able to handle it.
i like brass myself. i have two. one heavy - have to use it on an acoustic with the action high. if i try it on my strat or my tele it drags on the fretboard... but on the acoustic,,, niiiiicce and raspy and gritty.
i also have a thinner-wall brass that works on all of my guitars, and it's much easier to land on the right notes... sometimes the heavy one over-shoots the runway.
open G is probably the most popular tuning. if you're gigging, you can reaort to just dropping the first string down to D... quick and easy.
open C is really sweet.
as FZ put it... "twitch around and have a good time"
