Why are some guys hung up on who's the greatest player or what's the best song?

I don't know why, i'm not into that.
For me music is to enjoy, not to compete.

Heh... heh... wow, this question was REALLY directed at me...............
I guess it's just for me, the first time I heard Stevie Ray, he blew me away! And I still have never fully recovered........ and hope that I never will.............

i don't really worry about it.... i just listen to whatever comes to my mind at the moment that fits the feeling i have usually, some bands more than others, but i have no "best/favorite" because you can't judge that in my mind

Excellent question. Sorry I have no answer.

I listen to who and what I like and that's it.

It's all arbitrary at best. I think even the original posters know that. You're going to get a different set of answer from every generation represented here.

I still say the best guitar players are people we've never heard of, or ever will hear of. Talent doesn't equal fame.

Because most guys who own and play guitars aren't musicians, but jocks in disguise. Like most men, they see everything as a competition, and the most fun to be had is figuring out how is "the best" team/quarterback/center/pitcher/driver/guitar player In The Whole World.

Musicians know better.

You seem unconvinced, blues boy.

I feel certain that Nikki was NOT thinking of you when she opened this thread. In fact, I dare say that none of us have given your individual hero-worship of SRV and insistence that he was The Greatest Guitarist To Ever Walk The Earth - common as that belief is - a second thought.

:D

Nikki, I agree with you 110% - every time I see a who is...what is.. the best ...player, guitar, amp, T-shirt, sandwich....whatever- I cringe. Also the " I want to buy a guitar...what should I buy?" thread I wanna scream. There , ok I got that off my chest...

We all have those moments where we were immediately blown away by a certain guitar player or band. Sometimes that happens over a period of time when you hear a body of work and the light just goes on. Lists like these go one forever and it is interesting to see what names keep popping up
