I posted this on the Fender Modern Amps section but I'm not getting much response so I thought I'd set a link to it here if that's ok? It's his birthday very soon and I want to make sure I get it delivered in time.

Have you seen the Cube 20 or 30x? Different modeling amps, lots of effects, and very versatile. Sounds awesome on the clean channel too.

There is also the Fender G-dec (3rd generation). Dial in what he wants to sound like.

Not sure what your budget is, but I'd suggest looking at a Cyber-Champ too.

Hi Brian - I don't know what the UK pricing would be, but I've been very pleased with the Vox VT15. It's a small size, has a wide variety of amp models and effects, and when the headphones are connected, disables the speaker for silent practice.

We've been very pleased with the variety and the quality of sound from this amp - between this, and the Fender (Super Champ XD), it's like having a room full of different amps to choose from for recording.

For reference, the current pricing here in the US is $169, so I believe it should fall within your stated budget.

Hope this helps - happy birthday to your son!

+1 on either the Vox or the Fender. Great amps!!

Hi Brian,I concure with pbass and cc the little Vox modeling amps are great.A music store owner I know gave his son the little 5W Vox and for a lark plugged into a 4-12 cab and was amazed by the sound the little brute was capable of,the Vox would be my 1st choice from 5Ws up.I haven't used the small Fenders but from reports I've heard they are great little amps.

You guys are brilliant. Thanks so much for all your advice. I've narrowed it down to the vox or the Fender scxd. I am leaning towards the Fender as I am rather biased towards Fender ;)

Everyone here who knows me will attest that I am a Fender junkie but the Marshall MG15 FX is a sweet little amp. It has nice DSP and even better a headphones/ipod input so you can have some peace. I have one and it is not a bad little practice amp.

My practice amp is the Fender Frontman 25DSP
The sound is great. For a 25 watt it can really crank
and still has a beautiful tone. It even has a plug for
headphones and you can plug your CD/MP3 player in it
to jam with. Features built-in effects and amp style
settings. I've ordered many things online from Guitar Center
(guitar, bass, amps, effects, strings, etc.) never had a problem.
I totally recommend this amp!
Note: I was not paid for this endorsement.

what i would recommend is the Fender Frontman amp. I recently purchased it and it's fantastic. I love it, great rock tones from it and its got some effects (reverb, chorus, delay, tremolo) and an acoustic simulator amp. You wont hear anything bad from me, awesome distortion tones and clean tones. Mine is a 25watt, so i highly recommend it

Just a quick update to let you know that I went for the Vox VT15 in the end. The Marshall and the Fender were too close to call but I liked the versatility of the Vox. I'm sure he'll love it.

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions - it's made me think I'm gonna get me a small amp too. I quite like the look and sound of the Fender Super Champ FX especially.

Just razzin' you! Good luck with the purchase.

Sorry for being an anal retentive pinhead, but that's the Super Champ XD.
Just a heads up should you go Googling it or something :)
Oh, and good luck with the new amp, I'm sure your son will enjoy it.
