I am looking to purchase a standard fender strat made around 1989. Thing is, the serial number starts with an F followed by 0. It has a swimming pool configuration and instead of "Made in USA" under Stratocaster, it is stamped on the back. Any idea what this is???

I am not sure of what the common cutouts were back then, so a swimming pool may be right. But the rest of your description does not seem right. Typically an '89 would have this type of headstock with:
a) E8, E9, or maybe N0
b) Made In USA on front

Two question without pics ...
1) Is it possible someone took a MIJ and added "Made in the USA" to the back of the headstock and also removed the "Made In Japan" from the back of the neck near the neck pocket?
2) Does the truss-rod ring look right?

I have to agree... Something just sounds hinky with this guitar. I think some pics would help clear things up.

Stamped as in "ink stamped" or as in "stamped into the wood" ??

These kinds of beasts pop up from time to time. Some folks claim them to be MIA for export out of the USA, but recently someone posted some pictures of one and it was clearly not American made (as the electronics were of the Asian variety).

So please post as many pictures as you can (including under the pickguard, etc).

Now that there's a nice picture of a strat neck with two trees, do you guys mind telling me why there is one tree on the new American Standards, while there are two trees on this guitar and on many other vintage guitars out there. Is it because of the staggered tuners?

Yes, it's the staggered tuners. They changed the break angle of the strings across the nut, thus rendering the second tree unnecessary.
