OK - here's the iTunes list of most downloaded songs of all time:

I'm not sure whether to laugh or cry... :?

Predominantly the large budget and heavily marketed groups/artists.

The comment below the list is quite true.

The only thing I've ever bought off iTunes is two different blues albums by Pink Anderson. They didn't make the top-25 cut, huh? Weird.

There's another site that tells what each of their net worth is - - based on music sales, concert sales and promotionals....that would really make you cry!

I wonder what that list would be like if so many people didn't get their music illegally or be cool like me and use rhapsody...

In all fairness there wasn't an iTunes until relatively recently. So it's entirely likely that if iTunes had been around for fifty or sixty years the most downloaded songs would be songs by the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, Led Zeppelin etc.

It's just the recent history that's so sad. Why do people buy pop music when there's so much good stuff out there in other genres? I just can't wrap my mind around it.

The music industry tells 13 year olds what to like and they follow. Sad!!
They do most of the buying!! :(

I have to admit that I like being able to buy a song at a time, particularly now that the tracks are higher quality and most of the digital rights copy protection is gone. I'm sure most of us, ahem, older members remember buying albums with one or two good songs with the rest being filler.

I know the times have changed but I really miss my old favorite brick and mortar music stores. There aren't many left now. There are only a few independents scattered around the Phoenix area and the music sections of the corporate stores are shrinking in favor of DVDs. Oh well.
