I think it was the best guitar playing decade as far as technique goes, even the worst bands had players with killer chops. It just got to the point though where the songs writing got as bad as the big hair. But there are a lot of really great players from that decade.

I sure miss Vito

The solo at 2:26 is superlative. Such a shame he disappeared.

Was it overdone in the 80's? Sure it was.

Was it fun? Sure it was.

Lots of shred-VH-style clone leads, but it was loud, obnoxious, and in your face good times.

DLR, when hasn't he overdone anything? I saw him live on the Eat em and Smile tour and what a cool show it was.

The 80's music scene is the absolute low point artistically since the birth of rock and roll. There were some great guitar players in bands like Ratt, but the crap they spewed out for music while wearing spandex, eyeliner, and lipstick, is really embarassing.

I feel so sorry for the people who grew up in that era and have those bands to look back on as they age. I know a guy that is in his late 30's and is a very good player. I went over to his house and he had pictures of groups like Warrant on his walls.

I was thrilled when Kurt Cobain came along and saved us from all that trash. It makes Kurt one of the most important people in the history of rock in my eyes...over the best frontman, Freddie Mercury.

Hi Bill I was there too and YES it was that overdone, but that was part of the 80's too. If some was good then more was better, everything to excess and then just a little bit more.

It was a really fun decade. A lot of stuff today (music, video, clothing, entertainment in general) seems mostly to be a rehash of the 70's and 80's with better technology thrown in.

Yes Kurt definitely helped aid Al Gore in his quest to defend the Ozone layer when he deflated the hairspray bubble. But i would also say that ... IMO, Kurt Kobain's entire musical career was an artistic low point. He made being a mediocre guitar player cool and something to aspire to be which didn't make much sense to me. At least for some of us back then, we had bands like Jane's Addiction and Tool to turn to in the 90's. And I'm very thankful for Anthrax's Persistence of Time record. That still gets a lot of mileage 20 years later.

Kurt making a lack of chops cool and popular was easy to accomplish. The public mood was anxious for a change, any change. People were sick and tired of endless, mindless, soulless guitar solos that were nothing more than light-speed scales and squeals and dive bombs. It was cool for about 5 minutes but after almost a decade of it, it got old real quick. New bands playing entire songs without a single solo was a loud statement of protest. One that needed to be stated and one we should never ever forget. Wanking is not cool. Period. It is so uncool that an entire generation will reject it and reshape the landscape of a musical culture. I used to believe the 80's was the black hole of music and that nothing good came out of it but that's not entirely true. Guys like John Mellencamp and Tom Petty began their careers in the 80's so the decade does have some redeeming qualities but those redeeming qualities do NOT include guitar wankers.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Both of those artists released their Debut albums in the mid 70s so they survived the "Black Hole" of the 80s because they were great bands/artist/songwriters whatever you want to call them. The same could be said for bands like Iron Maiden and Metallica with respect to the 80s metal scene. Though i don't particularly care for Metallicas newer stuff and Maiden certainly had a rough time in the 90s with the departure of Bruce. Their music hardly contained mindless solos. Just look at a live performance of "Hallowed Be Thy Name" (With Bruce on Vocals NOT Blayze Bailey). Its a perfect example of a very powerful 80s Metal anthem. I like to think of guitar solos as (not to sound like a $@! here but) being part of the story of the song. So i guess if its surround by wank, then of course the solos would be labled as such. Jeez we could go on forever talking about this and that's what makes it so great i suppose.
