Ok, I'm old and I remember the good old days of buying a guitar.
I just bought a used 2004 MIA Strat from the local Music Go Round. The tag says sold with case. The case turns out to be a cheap soft Gator case. I want a real Fender case. I go to ebay, and theres plenty there. The usual selling price is $80 to $250 used, plus shipping. Some of the cases had broken latches, some were beat, and some of the higher priced ones were really nice. There was even a 1957 Strat case, broken latches and hinges selling for $3000. I did finally find a nice used 80's style Fender case for $50 from a guy on craigslist that I bought.
In the old days, when you bought a Fender, you got a Fender hard shell case. Period. No options, no gig bags, no paying an extra $100 for a case. You're already paying over $1000 for a guitar and you get a gig bag? Are cases that expensive for Fender to provide nowdays? I know the Custom Shop products come with a nice case, why not everything?
+1 I agree, You puy a Fender you get a Hard Case!

Stop complaining about Fender. It's not their fault. Like the man said earlier, all American Fenders come with a hard case of some kind. At the low end it will be a hard plastic black case that is sort of shaped like the old poodle cases. At the upper end it will be a tweed in a rectangle shape.

So if your American comes with a gig bag, somebody took the hard case.

2004 MIA should have come with a case. Because the guitar was used, they might not have the case for whatever reason.

All the new Fender American Standards and up seem to have included a hard case. At a certain price-point the hard case is usually part of the deal.

For the new guitars, Fender is just trying to keep the price down.

Personally, I prefer a really high quality gig bag (Incase, Reunion Blues...) for ease of transport and storage. They can cost as much or more than the hard case. So, having the option of saving some money to apply to the higher quality bag is OK. But if you don't like bags, particularly the light weight bags included with some of the guitars, I can see your point.

I really can't complain that my MIM did not have a case or even a gig bag when I consider the difference between what it was supposed to retail for and what I actually paid for it. It was marked down $357 from suggested retail so I could buy a lot of accessories for that if I felt so inclined.

Seems they had another black strat on the wall at the time and it was a MIM... vintage 2003 by the serial number. Still new, just hanging there. It has two knobs and a chrome pick guard if my feeble memory serves me. That's got a tag for well over $600 on it. I may have to go get a photo of it so we can mull it over and discuss what it might be. 8)

When I bought my American Standard J Bass, it was in perfect condition. It came shipped to the shop in the hard shell case within the shipping carton. Better than in a gig bag, or in the carton with the minimal packing materials.

Same here. From Fender, to Musician's Friend, to me. And, AFAIK no-one has touched it since it left the factory. I like that. I wanted to get a Fender Jazz bass at least once in my life that I was the first one to play. Outside of the factory testers, that is. Feels to me like it's really "mine". And the case is really nice. Glad I got the Am. Stad.

MY SKB hardshell is lightweight, durable and the guitar shape takes up less space and is less cumbersome to carry.

My G&G / Fender tweed case is bigger than it needs to be and takes up more space in the car, and the latches smack my thumbs every time I open it up.

I'll be in Bristol VA/TN in about a month. If you live any where near Boone, I'll meet you in Shady Valley and give you a fair price for the tweed case if it's in good shape. 8)

Thanks VT, but I'll keep it. It does a fine job of holding a guitar and it looks ;nice, it's just not the best style of case if you ever take your guitar out of the house.

Cheers,

n.
