I know people are going to say "whatever you like" but my son has been playing with the same strings for almost a year. I want to get him a new set but dont know what he has on now. I guess what would be similar to 9's and 10's for guitar kind of the most common I guess for a four string.
Thanks

Below is my comparison for "similarities" between guitar and bass string gauges. This is all my opinion, not scientific fact. And this is based on D'Addario nickel round wond string sets becuase that's pretty much all I use for guitar and bass.

9's for guitar = 40 - 95 for bass (Super Light gauge)
10's = 45 - 100 (Light gauge, this is what I use)
11's = 50 - 105 (Medium)

I don't know much about flat wound other than I think that they have slightly more tension than their round wound conterparts.

Some more info here: http://store.daddario.com/category/1459 ... ound_Wound

Chet is right on with "I use .045, .065, .080, .100", let us know how it works out.
