For those that can't speak French or have been in hibernation, Mardi Gras literally translates to "Fat Tuesday", Being the day before catholic lent, it's the last chance for the righteous to imbibe. and a chance for some to earn substantial beadage.

After the Saints Superbowl win, it should be quite a party this year!

They had to get rid of all the nice food so they made pancakes to use it all up cuz it would go off over lent.
They taught us that every year in primary school

I’m sorry I’m not up to speed……what is Lent?......Are you talking about the mythical 40 days of fasting form ancient times. Has anybody even don’t that since the 5th century…how does that relate to pancakes?.......Please don’t take the wrong way I mean no disrespect in asking the question; I am genuinely curious as I’m not Catholic and really know nothing about it… I don’t want to turn this into a religious thread of any sort but would like Lent explained to me to satisfy my curiosity…Thanks

Cheers
Bill

Lent is "the Holy Season" and is definitely recognized by millions of Catholics in current days, which includes me. As far as fasting goes, though, it has evolved into not eating meat on Fridays and days of obligation (Ash Wed, Holy Thurs, Good Friday, and Easter). Have you ever noticed how all the fast food companies come out with a fish sandwich in Jan/Feb? It is not a coincidence ...

United Kingdom, Ireland, and Australia - Shrove Tuesday, Pancake Day or Pancake Tuesday

Brazil - Terça-feira gorda - Fat Tuesday - the final day of Brazilian Carnival.

Greece - Apocreas, which means "from the meat" since they don't eat meat during Lent, either.

Sweden - Fettisdagen (Fat Tuesday).

USA In Catholic and French-speaking parts of the United States this day is called Mardi Gras.

Germany - "Fastnacht" (Also spelt "Fasnacht", "Fasenacht", "Fasteloven" (in the Rhine area) or "Fasching" in Bavaria.)

In France they call it Mardi Gras, which means Grease or Fat Tuesday.

In Iceland the day is known as "Sprengidagur" (Bursting day).

Has anyone seen 'Hop' today...he might be in the thick of it
