I like just a little delay (~130ms) and some reverb.
Pretty much like to keep things clean most of the time,
but I'll play around with other effects.

I use a Boss CS-3 compressor but if you want really nice cleans look at your pickups and amp. Turn the guitar volume down to around 6 to keep the pickups from getting crunchy and swap the amp tubes to lower gain tubes.

I have the Boss Compressor/sustainer. I gotta be honest I don’t use it much. It just robs to much tone for what it gives me in return.. For clean I hate it….I do like it as a gain cutter on my tube amps because it gets me right into the Blues realm by robbing enough gain but adding some nice Harmonic overtones.. But for the most part I just cant find anything usable with it for my sound. As far as cleans I don’t know why anyone would want to compress the cleans. Now sustain I can understand but that comes with some good Pickups/ or how you dial your amp. I cant see that a compressor pedal is really that useful of a tool unless you really dig what that pedal does or you get it for free… I do use mine sometimes but I really wish I had the money back I paid for it…

Cheers
Bill

Anyone know what some of the big name country players have in their rigs? I am wondering what Brad Paisley uses.

I believe he's using a four-knob Keeley compressor. I've never tried that one, but the two-knob is awesome, and has pretty much become the industry standard for country pickers in the last few years. I still like the MXR Dyna-Comp, especially the script-logo reissue and the newer basic model which is now true-bypass. The MXR, in my opinion, doesn't work as well after an OD as the Keeley does for smoothing out the tone, and I don't think it's quite as transparent. Definitely not a bad pedal for less than a hundred bucks, though, and if you like to adjust on the fly, the little rubber jackets that cover the knobs make it a really foot-friendly box.

:D I use the Boss GT-10 with my gtrs, I think is good, for the bass and acoustic gtr I use the Boss Compression Sustainer CS-3, for the mixing I often use a dbx 166.

I had an EHX Soul Preacher, for about a week. I hated it. It was my first compressor pedal ever. I've been playing guitar for 20 years, but never bothered with a compressor before. One big reason why I didn't like it was that it added a lot of hiss when I turned it on. I tried other compressors and the same thing happened. Well, compressors boost low signals and decrease higher signals. My amp (Mesa-Boogie Blue Angel) is designed to run hot and therefore has more hiss than other amps of its power. A compressor just boosted the hiss.

Where am I going with this...oh yeah...I found the prefect compressor for me in the Visual Sound Route 66 because it has a built in adjustable noise suppressor that removes the hiss very nicely. It has more control to find the sweet spot than the Soul Preacher had, so I consider it an upgrade from the Soul Preacher. Oh, and the Route 66 is two pedals in one enclosure, so now I have an overdrive too.

Nevin I didn't use a compressor for several years but especially on clean tones I find it useful because I don't have to baby my attack on the string in a live situation. I also fell in love with the "pop" or crispness associated with the pedal. I currently use a Boss CS3 but like Metropolitan mentioned earlier in his thread the dreaded hiss is amplified in the OD channel on my amp depending on my gain setting in that channel and the gain on the pedal. It's a trade off I live with and nothing a volume pedal can't fix when you're not playing.

There are many more expensive compressor sustainers on the market but for the money Boss is just fine. I'd love to drop a Keeley in the chain but I'm not going to put $200.00+ in a compressor for weekend warrior work.

A Pigtronix Philosopher's Tone was my Christmas present to myself. I love it. Check out the demo here:

They also demo many other pedals.
