ex:
3holes: http://www.guitarcenter.com/Lace-Sensor ... 1400752.gc

1 hole: http://www.guitarcenter.com/Seymour-Dun ... 1127382.gc

another question, which one of those pickups; 3 mounting holes on each side or 1 mounting hole on each side would fit a standard hss strat?

The humbuckers with one hole on each side are fairly standard. alot of guitars only have two mounting holes (in the body of the guitar or on the pickguard)

The three hole pickups. The middle hole is probably for use in the same way as the above. two screws per pickup.

The additional holes would be for if your guitar offers a place for more mounting screws, like most if not all of fenders newer HSS strats (two screws on one side, one on the other) This is probably to offer more "stability" to the pickup. so it wont wiggle around as much.

as you can see here

To answer your question about which would fit in the standard HSS strat?

Both would. Although the "three holed" pickups would be preferable as you would be able to mount it without drilling another center hole.

thank you for your reply.
now that i think about it, if i just get a new pickup that has 1 mounting hole on each side and get a new pickgaurd with one mounting hole in each side that would work also. wouldn't it?
