A local bar called Purgatorys (really), has changed their band pay policy. It used to be bands would make $400 a night. Now they pay the band 25% of the bar sales for that night. Can you trust a bar owner to give you an honest bar total? The place is small-only holds about 80 people. Another place in town called Tommy's is paying the band a guarantee of $300 and a % of the bar sales. I guess bar owners can't count on thier own bar being a popular place to go to anymore. They want the band to bring thier own crowd, and they had better be a drinkin' crowd!

I wouldn't trust 'em.

..and a drinkin' crowd that don't fight!

Good luck with that!

At least the bars in your area are offering to pay you 3-digits. Many bars here won't pay you that much until you've paid your dues by playing freebies during the week. Or some clubs here used to have various pay-for-play schemes where the bars would sell bands tickets that the bands would then have to sell in order to make their pay for the night. Besides, are you sure thats the rate for ALL bands and all shows? Some bands here make more than ohter bands, because they have bigger followings and always draw a crowd. Perhaps if you play and bring in a good crowd consistently, the pay will get better. If your band is new, and not yet well known, then that also factors in to lower pay rates until you can prove yourselves.

Running a bar is not as easy as it seems, especially with smoking bans and things like that, the crowds are not what they used to be. But if you don't like how they do things, you can always start your own place and book your own shows...Thats about the only options you have...play by their rules, or start a place and do it the way you think is right.

For a bar that is decent pay. I could remember bands that would play and all they got were free drinks until they proved they could draw a crowd.
